Red Velvet Mites

Well it looks like they have returned! Have read the thread on killing spider mites, I seem to have the "red velvet'' ones. I panicked and sprayed them with a mix of "Go-nats", "Neem", and water+H2O2+dish soap. Was hit by Hurricane Issac and all I have is the anti-bacterial dish soap
and not too sure when the stores will open so I can make calibuzz's calicleaner
I gave my plant(3 wks into budding) a good spraying and its sits in the tub in the dark.
Any suggestions?

this and this......

I've never even heard of this mite (two spotted is the menace here) but I bet either one of those would do it.

i had some on a pepper plant i just sprayed hard with water to knock them off every morning for about 3 days and they have been gone and have not come back.

well im not nitpicking here of course your methods will work wasnt like i was hating. i was just saying seemed like he was on limited options thats all.

yes and you were correct , I simply missed that detail and am truly sorry for mentioning that shit !
Those don't appear to be a plant eating mite though, they stick to soil and eat fungi eating insect. sounds beneficial to me.

hey thanks to all for the reply
I am growing hydro in a dwc and the only reason I call them red velvet mites is because that is the only picture that i could find of the little shits.
They got my last plant and I did not know what to do so I killed it!(the plant that is) With this one I noticed that a couple of the leaves were starting to get white spots, that is what made me look for them. The last time I found them they had gotten into my buds. I sprayed this plant with neem oil before I started to flower I guess I did not do a good enough job.
I hope the hydro store will be open next week but that is a 140 mile round trip. The one we had here in town packed up and moved a few months ago.
The hurricane is over and it will take a little while before things get back to what we call normal.

The red mite depends upon which one you have. It is usually found in the soil or mulch and feeds on vegetable matter. The larval stage which has six legs, is about one tenth of the size of the adult and lives on blood from animals and sometimes humans......The more notorious Red Spider Mite (Tetranychus urticae) which causes damage to plants, is a relative but is much smaller and for most of its life is not actually red apart from a short period in the autumn when they can be an orange-red colour.

They do not like wind or water and actually easier to get rid of than others are.
Velvet usually just leaves yellow spots in leaves the others devour leaves.

Hey thanks George,

does not look like the fucker in pic. wish I could take a picture and post it but I only see them under a 100x scope and when i see the damage to the leaves. I will look around some more for a better pic to post of what I am seeing. I am moving back home tonight and I still don't have internet because of the storm.

I think I saw something about hydro or DWC in another post in this thread but not sure. I'm assumeing that your using soil.

If you are growing in soil and they look like http://www.petsnails.co.uk/documents/hypoaspis-miles.html they are good to have. Red Velvet mites look very simalar to Hypoaspis mites.

Hypoaspis mites wont bother your plants and will kill the insects that live in and around the soil. Problem is if you do have them. Then chances are you have other pests that they are eating usualy fungus gnats or other insects. When they run out of food they eat each other and kill off the population. I had the same problem a few weeks ago and killed everything thinking that they were spider mites. Best way to get rid of them "IF" you are using soil is to scrape off the soil untill you get close to the roots then hit with neem insecticidal soap or whatever you have then cover the soil with sand. This will kill everything good and bad in the soil.

If your using a hydro or DWC system then take them into your shower and spray the heck out of them. This won't kill all the bugs but it will give you time for the stores to reopen and get what you need before they do too much damage to your plants.

ItsSaturday,

Thanks a whole bunch! Yep, that is what I have Hypoaspis mites, I can now sleep better.

I had one plant last year that was outdoors and I brought it into my grow space to finish budding and that is were they must have come from.

I am new at this and have so many other grow problems that I am always in a panic about things.

Once again thanks for the help and the link.

This bud's for you!
