HPS - High Pressure Sodium
MH - Metal Halide
Both can be used. HPS is better for flowering since it provides the red color of the light spectrum
MH are better for vegging since it puts out the blue color of the light spectrum

usually requires a seperate ballast and hood unless you are using a conversion setup

n can u tell me wut a ballast is n tha hood is wut da reflecters? sorry for all da questions I just needed to ask
Yeah I got the fancy switchable kind. You get one ballast about the size of a shoe box and is real heavy. It has a switch on it which says either MH or HPS depending on which way it gets flipped. It comes with two bulbs one MH and one HPS. Only way to fly in my book. Aint been using the MH part of it much lately since I have mostly been vegging under CFLs but it handy to have it in case.
dependent how meny watts you want but i got mine 400 watt switchabe digital ballest for 150 it included the hood and both HPS and MH lights with free shipping and the best part is there is no buzzing like there is with the regular tipe of ballest i love it i run it all day and use MAYBE 15 kilo watts a day running it

and I've been growin under cfls wit pretty good results but I keep hearing if u use da mh or hps lights they just take off n shoot up

sure, but it all depends how you do it. i had someone mistake my CFL grow for a HPS grow...

I need to know some pro opionions on my lighting. i have 3 cfl bulbs 42w 2800 lumin 2700k color and a 8 bulb 71" 100 watt/bulb tanning bed for growing. my grow box is 2'x6'x4'. what else do i need to add for lighting to improve my crop?
