Republicons have gerrymandered things so severely that when they won by only 5 points in 2010 they picked up 63 seats

Apathy and ignorance.

People stopped being involved because it was 'too hard', 'too nasty', 'too corrupt' and/or 'not work the time' and so they ignored what was happening in droves.

This had the expected result of magnifying the influence of those who DID remain involved, very often people who had a vested interest in the outcome.

Add in the politics of divide and conquer, gerrymandering, legalised bribery and voter suppression and you have the fine mess we see playing out all around us.
