Power Savings from COB switch...REAL Numbers

 I don't understand the drama but I do agree with reading comprehension being a must. I simply wanted to share my old setup useage compared to my new setup with COBs. My old system consisted of a 600w hps, coolhood (flower), 2 (124 actual watt) china specials (veg) which is now switched to 430W COB (flower) and 90w COB (veg). My total household use includes my grow. I do everything as I have done since forever with the exception of the light swap out. SO, I can attribute my additional savings of power to a whole hell of a lot less A/C.:hump:
Ok, you dropped roughly 60% usage off your bill from losing 418w per hour. Total per month you saved in power was ~150 KW/h. That does not add up to the 60% you are claiming and I guarantee that running 50% fan usage (saving what, maybe 1.2 KWh per DAY, or about 36 KWh per month) and the slightly less A/C usage will not equate to the numbers you are claiming.

But hey, you tell your story. Not saying COBS are not a great light source as I utilize them, but please dont spread bullshit for the noobs to pick up on. Oh wait, we are on the internet where people can tell a story, 10 people will like their post, and noobs think its gospel.

Carry on troll.

Thank you. I bring to you the good news and am subjected to yer bullshit. I dust my feet off to you. I just tell my story, take it or leave it. Perhaps the key to your frustration is my omitting I do supplement the grid with electricity during the day. I felt the pv array wasnt pertinent information as I have always had it. Also, not using as much kwh early on keeps me out of the higher priced tiers.

this is how you really save money on your bills with COBs.....air cool them using your old hoods in storage! just finishing up my prototype this week. gonna replace the glass with aluminum sheet and drilling holes for the COBs to sit through. now i can use less COBS and drive them a little harder(~70w each) and air cool them getting rid of all the heat except a little bit of radiated heat from the diodes themselves. gonna save my ass in the desert :)

Well it could certainly be where the confusion stems from unless you sold back the same amount of electricity during each cycle... Which depending on location/season it could vary significantly... You felt it wasnt pertinent because this doesnt apply? Always sunny? Do you live in Philadelphia? ;P

should have air cooled cobs by tomorrow night. this would be the ultimate saving set up. not only am i running far less wattage for the same space but efficiently removing almost all the heat created and quickly removing it from the room.

this piece will mount inside the XXXL magnum hood and then i will be air cooled, thus getting rid of almost the heat. should keep the room super cool even during the summer. savings all around :)

then as stated above comes CO2 and all the bells and whistles.

Nice! Agreed. Vent that shit out.

I strongly agree the LEDs should have optional venting. My bill went from 1250+ to 750 using 4500 led w compared to 8k in HPS & T-5. W/ veg lights running too. Went from 1200 to 800 w/ led In veg. Using a cunt hair more electric at the grow spot now to for other things.
Just added 2 stand up AC's though that will prob. Jump my bill to 950ish.
My HPS was vented & only put out about the same as my LEDs in heat. Took 2 Stand-ups to run the HPS room & takes 2 to run my led room @ 3500w less.
Yes, I have reductions by not using 4 , 8" in-lines but I'd gladly run a few 6" fans to pull the heat out & have better control over temps.
Venting your LEDs is the way to go.

Thanks for posting your realistic numbers :)

i will probably just throw a 6" max fan to run through all of them that i build. right now im planning on three lights. two over my table and one off to the side that starts the next round while the table finishes. that way when its chop time i have plants at 3+ weeks waiting to take their place.

almost finished up! looks bright as hell!! it is bright as hell at 666W ;)
just have to bolt the drivers down and tidy up the wiring and this heavy sumbitch is ready for business!
Very nice! Solis-tech was gonna come out w/ the cob HPS hood design a few yrs. ago n never followed through. Then Johnson did it w/ the Maxi. Deff a great way for us to utilize our old hoods & save a bunch of work bending metal to build a vented cob unit. I might even try it one of these days. Was actually thinking about retro-fitting my Pro-4's to be vented. Don't wanna void out my warranty though.
Great job! Gonna install lenses or reflectors?

Why not just run 1000watt DE's then?
Pretty sure 2 Pro4's will yield me more, low ceilings too. I really, really like the enhanced spectrum as well.
But seeing how you mentioned it, here's something I've been working on w/ my boy. image.jpg Got some tweakin of the lights to do still but wanted to get into flower & will have to after this run. Putting my Pro-9 in the middle & probobly 2 of my Pro-4's when I get Amare's new fixture they're coming out w/ next month. Plenty of AC here so not worried about venting.
The AC/DC hoods vent & don't cause much light loss.
How you doin Mongo? I know you like the DE. Me to, I primarily share my led grow here though. Still got all my HPS goods though & am working on a new spot for them soon. Gonna mix em up w/ my Pro-4's once i get the new models.

You guys do awesome things!!!! Those look like the phantoms with removable ballasts!!!! I love all the LED and COB pics as well. But i mean I'm paying 100 bucks for 1000 watt of DE and what a LED guy is paying 70 bucks for 750 watts to cover 24-25 square feet? Not talking whats better, i just haven't been excited to use my cobs yet. One day i will!!!!
