in pots 1 gallon per foot but yea iv grown some massive plants in 5gal. buckets i just drilled some 1in holes in the bottom of them for drainage and they were good to go!
The size of the pot doesn't affect how big the plant can grow, just how often you have to water. A large pot will hold more water, and allow for less frequent waterings, so it's more convenient if they need to be left unattended for any reason.
Hairy Bob you are correct, I've grown some massive plants in less than 5 gallon containers. The only problem with the smaller pots is when the plants get big they can be blown over easily by strong winds.
