Pollinating Pre- Flowers

In another thread, some guy made the bold claim that this is what breeders do when they just need a few seeds. I didn't respond, because I didn't know one way or the other.

Anyway, my kid was growing out a seed to get some experience, that turned out to be a male and I had a few clones around from replacing my mother plants. I did 12 clones to get 2 mothers. LST and Bonsai and keep the 2 with the nicest growth habit, and I had 3 older clones in gallon pots, the rest in party cups. Been working with the same strain/clones for close to 3 years.

His plant was outside, the balls not quite open. I moved the 3 in gallon and 5 in the cups and placed them around his plant.

Well, they got knocked up plenty good, so you can most certainly use Pre Flowers for a few seeds.

Then I decided to carry it a bit further. I left the 3 in the gallons outside to make sure the seeds developed well in the sun. They did.

The 5 in the party cups, I moved back inside under the T-12's I use for clones (4-40w tubes), and the 18/6 schedule they had been under. I'm going to cut those today and dry and I'll report how the seeds matured under the 18/6. I haven't popped any out yet, so we'll see how that goes.

I was honestly just thinking about this the other night, what a coincidence that we had the same thought.
Mine was more along the lines of: Pollinate a pre-flower, grow out a few seeds to backup the genes, and then chop em off and flower her.

Why go to all that trouble?

The most interesting thing about this little experiment, was the clones in the party cups. Not only did the seeds develop nicely, I had 0 white/immature seeds, but they did it under my very low power 'clone' lights (T-12's), and on a 18/6 schedule.

I just harvested the whole clone for the seeds. Did this 2 days ago and the seeds look perfect. I'm drying them now, then a bit of 'winter' in the fridge and then I'll see how they germinate.

What I'm saying is, if you're going to do this, just do a couple extra clones for the seeds. No need to go to all the trouble of removing the seeds and then flowering that clone. Just keep it in veg till the seeds are ripe and harvest the whole thing. I let them go for ~5 weeks after pollination to give the seeds plenty of time to mature.
