this was a legit protest... soon you wont be able to protest anything at all without getting beaten and arrested

From what I've read, they didn't have a permit to march. When the police ordered them to disperse, they answered by throwing rocks and trash cans.

I'm not a big fan of law enforcement, but these G20 protests have a tendency to get out of hand, and are rarely calm, peaceful gatherings.

They need as much security as they can get when 20 leaders of the world meet inside one building. Thankfully we don't see this kind of police activity every day.

Riot police sure are having a blast with those LRAD's and heavily armored vehicles. Good news is that no riots have started yet.

Teehee.. He says "We were told if we didn't pass this bill, the sky would fall"... obviously not a realistic scenario, so it's pretty easy to disregard any other scenarios that came after that.
 
The problem is that the protest is illegal, but totally lawful.


Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

Peaceful protests are totally lawful. Just wait until its not peaceful anymore.

Illegal, but lawful? Hmm.... Actually, no.

To stage a large protest typically requires permission from the locality you want to protest in. If you don't have permission to use public areas for your protest, the police can definitely drive you out. That's exactly what happened in Pittsburgh today. The protesters didn't have permission to be where they were, the police asked them to leave, and the protesters refused. Then (allegedly) they started throwing things at police, which prompted police to use tear gas, etc.

What gets me in the videos I've seen, is most of the people look like average college kids and aren't holding signs or protesting. They're just gawking, but they still refused to leave when directed by police. Then they get all huffy and puffy when the cops gas them, when they could have avoided it by simply leaving the area. People don't seem to realize that once the cops put on their riot gear, they aren't playing games anymore. They are in it to win it, and if that means some rubbernecking college kids get tear gassed, well, them's the breaks.

Like I said before, I'm not a fan of law enforcement - but when a cop in riot gear tells me to clear the area, I move my ass, pronto. Is it just me or do college kids have some cockeyed sense of entitlement?
 
College kids are bullet proof. Until they get shot that is. Really though, thats about the size of the lunchtime crowd at the local McDonalds. I can't believe they needed more than 1 or 2 police officers to take care of that little incident.

I wonder what would happen if say 70,000 protesters had been there and somehow the permit got denied, but people showed up anyway and the cops got their panties all in a wad.

Doob, look up the words, legal and lawful in Black's law dictionary, you ll find there is a huge difference. A law would be something that would impinge on someone elses rights, things like requiring a permission slip to show your frustration in a public manner is just a statute.

Strangely enough, I happen to have a law dictionary. You're right. I guess the "legal" definition and the common definition don't match up entirely. Not surprising, legal definitions rarely coincide with the common ones. i thought you just meant regular old "lawful". My bad. :mrgreen:

Do you have anything that shows the protesters were not given permission to be there? And how do you know the people who where throwing things weren't with the police? It's been done before to make the protesters look bad ... why couldn't it be done now? All the videos I have seen of the protest ... the people were peaceful expressing their right to protest.:-|

There is no right to protest, and the right to assemble is not a natural right but a legal one.

If you watch the videos of the protest, you'll hear the police state over and over "This is not a legal assembly, please disperse immediately". A permit is LEGAL permission to assemble on public land, if you don't secure a permit when one is required, you have NO right to assemble - even if it's a "peaceful" assembly.

The police were armed with nonlethal weapons, why would they need to throw rocks and trashcans?

Hmm.. so now there are "secret" rights that aren't "listed"?

Considering that is ISN'T a guaranteed right in the first place, it is impossible to have it "taken away".

there are some rights that are natural (aka "god given" rights) and others that YOU must SECURE for yourself.

The so-called "right to protest" is a right that YOU must SECURE for YOURSELF, through legal means (aka GETTING A PERMIT).

alright so you take one example where protesting goes bad, which happens with anything in life, sometimes shit goes bad

you take a good idea with bad choices on both sides, military, and protester alike, and you get kent state

was a horrible day for this country indeed

but just because kent state happened doesnt mean protesting shouldnt be allowed


i dont need a permit to stand on a street corner with a sign, no matter what law says i do thats bullshit


i will stand where i want, voicing any opinion i want

just dont bring out the national guard and shoot at me plz
