Plot For Vegetable Garden

In my backyard i have a small plot of dirt where i have planted vegetables the last couple years. I realize that the dirt is probably running out of nutrients in the soil. Do you think i can just mix an organic soil mixture with my old soil, and everything will be good?

lots of compost and look up how to double dig on youtube to reverse soil compacting from rain and ground traffic.

There are things like Happy Frog Soil Amendment which is basically a super rich compost/nutrient amendement for your soils. Personally this is what I like to do:

Add compost - compost everything! True compost takes a long time to break down but adding the unprocessed compost material to the top of your soil helps retain moisture, provides benefitial microorganism and supplies the necessary carbon needed for bacteria to mineralize organic nutrients.

I also recommend mixing in bone and blood meal into the soil. This type or organic nutrient is not immediately accessible to the plant and must be mineralized, or put into an inonic form before plants are able to utilize it. Because of this you can apply pretty high doses to the soil without worry of nutrient burn as it is essentially time released. This process is sped along by the application of carbon and nitrogen rich compost.

To improve soil airation you can do simple things like adding shredded brown bags to the soil or mixing in straw.

You might think about adding dolomitic lime to bolster calcium which increases magnesium absoprtion rates and to buffer pH fluctuation.

Watering with a bat guana tea. Bat guano is rare in that it is soluable and immediately available for absorption without first being mineralized. To do this I fill a trash can with bat guano and water and then throw in an airpump, a handful of soil from my compost for benefitial bacteria, and some stagnant pond water and let percolate for a week before attaching it to my drip.
