No reason to do that...I can veg numerous plants under a 400w, and flower at least 3 large plants...

I agree, add a few "soft white" CFL's in there to mix up the spectrum a little bit, your plants will thank you for it when they are flowering.
that light will work throughout the whole grow though without adding anything.

It looks that way because its an Industrial HID, Like what they use to light Home Depot's Garden center and tons of other stuff lol
Yeah you can definitely use that fixture to veg your plants. You could even flower with that fixture if you pick up an HPS Conversion Bulb.
