There are all kinds of small plants that you can put on a desk to inhance appearance and calm the nerves.

1. Cactus garden.
You can get these at just about any flower shop. Obviously they wont need too much attention/water. Should be easy to do.

2. Aloe vera
Again, this is like the cactus garden. Not too much water or other maintenance. I keep aloe around because I am prone to buring myself while cooking, so having a plant that is as useful as well as visually appealing is always good. Aloe plants can get big though.

3. Herb garden
Usually don't need too much sunlight, but they will need a bit more water than the cactus garden. However the payoff is that you get fresh, home-grown garnish/flavoring to add to your meals!

4. Salvia divinorum
I've read that it can be grown as a house plant and am actually thinking of trying to grow some myself. I don't have too much info on growing it, so youd need to do some more research on this.

Alot of suggestions to grow cannabis, a good idea to learn cannabis. If you want to try to grow a plant with similar needs ie. light schedule and fert schedule that you can have openly on your desk for all the world to see I would suggest Chrysanthemums. I've recently received a couple chrysanthemums from my kids as a present, they picked them up at the dollar store. I took some cuttings and have them rooting in my makeshift hot house ie. converted aquarium/terrarium.
Two to three weeks for rooting, two weeks for veg.,14 hours light, eight to twelve weeks for flowering, 12 hours light. Same as cannabis. In the end you end up with a beautiful flowering plant you can give to your moms or girlfriend, major positive points from the ladies. Fert schedule is the same, feed every other watering. The PPM's are lower though, you want to stay in the 200-300ppm with a good liduid fert. I use schult's 10-15-10 for all my young plants.
I've got Pieris, search "Pieris" in this gardening thread, marigolds 15 6paks and 12 4" pots, Buxus cuttings and some Lavander, all using the same fert schedule, growing indoors in my cabinet under fluoros. Cant wait for spring to set them out.
Good luck
