pistils showing on a three week old plant

Questions for you really experienced peeps

1.How common is it to have pistils show up on a three week (or so) old plant?

It may even be 4 weeks old, but no more then that. And for sure it's sporting two sets of pistils. I have another the same age range that is just starting to show calyx looking growth and it's 4 times the size.

2. how much longer should it be kept in veg if already showing pistils?

The plant is not real big a few inches tall total. Less then a foot.

Thanks

Hey I hear you man, but I've been checking it out hard with my magnifying glass and couldn't believe what I was seeing, these have shown up in the last day or so or even less then 24 hrs. There is two more on the catty corner other side of stalk.

I went to take a photo so you'll see I'm not hitting the crack pipe here....

FYI I have no idea what it is, it's bag seed and was not one I expected to germ, it was tossed out in to media as a dead seed.

if they are on 12/12 light cycle then its possible..most of the time they can sex around day 20..if they are not on a timer with a 12/12 cycle..you either dont have enough light..or the lights are shorting out for periods of time

I'm home all day, no light shorting out here, on a 18/6 cycle with 6 100 watt cfl's and mylar every where. So lot's of light, good venting and fan blowing. Kind of strange, but WTF do I know, first garden.

are you seeing white hairs on this plant befor you changed the light cycle? If not i wouldnt worry about it. somtimes what you think is one thing is really just the begining of leave growth

These have never had a light change they have been on a 18/6 from germ. However I did change the timer for daylight savings time this week, I guess you could count that as a lighting change

The past two days i noticed similar growth on a couple of my plants and was curious as well. Djruiner diagram post just confirmed my questions. What i saw on mine were stipules not pistils.

+rep for djruiner and y.r. for asking my question!!

Thanks bro!

Yea... I'm thinking it's your eyes! While I understand these photos are not the best micro shots, I thinks it's pretty clear what it shows. I took some more this morning to try to make a better clear image for you (and others) to review.

One is just like the one I already posted, but with better light, the second is a cropped section of #1 then I took one from the backside of the stalk and it's pretty clear to see two white hairs sticking up.

Now I'm not trying to say you all don't know what your talking about here, but I've been studying here, reading a lot, and just had two I grew up with one going male and one going female, I'm able to tell apart balls from pistils and stipules from calyx, I have been using a magnifying glass to make sure I could see good and in fact the photos are shot through the magnifying glass as well.

Call crazy if ya want too.....

its not uncommon for a plant to show sex 4 weeks into vegging.you dont need to change the light cycle for a plant to show sex.

Definitely preflowers--nothing to worry about as resin said many strains will show preflowers in veg. Be happy it's a girl!

I know this is a bit of a silly question but no one has asked it yet. Have you checked for light leakage?

Yes no light leaking here... She made the move to the 3 gallon size pot and into the flower room today due to size restrictions and it's a Sativa strain. Thanks for the replies folks, I really didn't think pistils would show in veg, only in flower, goes to show you learn something new everyday.

Ah enlightenment.... once we reach harvest and roll a fatty! Fo sho

Hey gang,

So a week ago today I post this thread to ask about the signs of pistils in such a young plant... I was pleased to learn sex will show on it's own in veg, however a few people had said an auto flower strain will flower under any light.

So here we are 7 days later and I find myself asking is this an auto flower strain? Here is why I ask: 1. this was from bag seed so I have no idea it's history. 2. There is now a shit load of pistils all over the thing at ever node and in each tip of the stems, every where! starting to look kind of like my flowered plant only in micro format.

Having never seen an auto flower plant before I wouldn't know what one looks like, and being a first time grower I would have no idea if this is normal growth or not, also the leafs look totally different then all my other plants. I know these are not the best photos but what do you experienced peeps think?

Glad u added pics, this is one BEAUTIFUL plant, u have done an outstanding job with it! Having said that, I too, have no experience with autostrains. Being at now around 5 weeks to ur estimate (strain dependant & unknown), I would say it could be indicative of that particular strain to show early preflowers. Bumping so maybe u will get more input :)

it is not uncommon at all - id say its actually fairly common, depends on the strain or if you are going from seed or not also.

It is also to early to tell if your plant is an 'auto', I seriously doubt it is but it could be possible so don't rule that out just yet.

Hey man, sorry for the delay on getting back with you, been real busy.

I would say those are just preflowers, which are very nice to see at all let alone as early as you saw them. At 5 weeks a typical auto strain will have buds with dozens of hairs at each node. Ive had some autos that had full on colas at 5 weeks. Id say its a nice healthy non auto strain that will require 12/12 to truly flower. As others have said, be glad its a girl!!!

Oh and with preflowers that early, Id seed or at least clone her so if it turns out to be great smoke, you can keep the strain. Nothing better than being able to transplant nice and early knowing it when be a female when growing from seed. Ice by nirvana showed sex around 3 to 4 weeks for me and I kept it around for a while.

My last auto at 5 weeks exactly
