Photoperiod Vs Autoflower

Which is the best?

Both have there place, but we need to take time, care, yield, potency into consideration when determining which is the best for some one looking to achieve maximum yield.

I have grown both types of plant, and autoflowers certainly have their place for newbies who are just trying to achieve the goal of getting their first successful harvest.

But lets take a look:

:leaf:Auto-flowers:
- Typically lower in THC but have come a long way since they first arrived on the market.
- Are ready to harvest from seed in just 2 months.
- Yield considerably less on average then photo-period plants, you are lucky to get anything over 1oz per plant.

:leaf:Photo-period:
- Typically higher in THC/CBD then auto-flowering strains.
- Can yield anything from 2oz to 6+oz per plant.
- More risk of developing deficiency's/getting bugs as the time to harvest is considerably longer.

Both have their advantages but my question is which is the best for getting the most amount of bud in the shortest amount of time, since after all this is what we are all trying to achieve, is it not? :weed:

I look forward to your reply's.

My thoughts are autoflowering plants are the new generation of indoor growing, if you set it up right and have your harvest on a schedule you can rake in the buds with a 2 month harvest schedule, however some autos take longer than two months due to their VEG stage taking up a little more time, nirvana auto strains are known for that. My input on photperiod it is still a great plant to be grown outdoors because the photo period is already set up for you thanks to the sun, and the yields are greater. on to the potency of autos to photos, the autos have come a long way from when they first started i am growing a afghan kush ryder, which claims to have 22 % THC so you tell me.

I don't like autos. Well, I shouldn't say I don't like them but I'd prefer regular seeds any day. It's like driving a car; if I'm just going from A to B, don't give a shit just blah and get there an auto is alright. But if you want to be in control and actually drive the car, control all aspects of it, tell it what to do when, take the stick (manual). I like to be in control.

Plus you can't clone autos. If I get a real nice strain/pheno I like I can make it a mother and make clones all day. Don't get me wrong I'll grow an auto, but it better be a freebie.

auto's have there place thats for sure, im in the u.k and autos would work well for outdoor guerilla growing, because we don't have 9-10 weeks of 12/12 light (it can go from 16 hours to 9 hours in about 6 weeks and temps drop way too quickly for regular plants) if its indoor its regular plants all day!

I started growing an auto (and ran a competition) to see for myself, firsthand what these autos are. So many wrong assumptions from so many people who have never touched an auto before. It is best to find out for yourself. ;)

Myth: Autos are less potent.

I took a small nug off my recent auto grow and quick dried her with a hair dryer. It was potent to say the least. Once she is properly dried and cured, she will knock me on my ass. First auto I have ever smoked was my own and she can compete with a non-auto strain no doubt.

I like autos but I will not be purchasing them again. I am setting up a SOG op and autos will not cut it. Cloning from here on out.

I do have some left over freebie autos from Attitude and will grow them separately in my GL40 tent (a perfect tent for autos) but it will be just for fun.

If I wanted to make some seeds, I would use autos for experimenting. SOG auto op sounds good. However, getting the seeds will hamper production. Something to think about.

Same, i took a little bud off my dinafem auto haze, dried it over night and put it on the radiator for an hour, smoked it and got me very high... After this has been cured for 2 weeks its gonna taste dank.

I think auto's would be very good for beginners wanting to grow some bud and learn how to look after a plant at the same time.

AUTOS are LESS potent, and yield LESS....
I mean come on?? you cant wait two or 3 more weeks?
plus you have to start autos from seed as far as I know.
one female plant can ideally last forever,
but thats just my opinion/experience

For me autos have their place, but only under certain conditions.

They can handle extreme temp swings, poor growing skills, over fertilization, all kinds of stuff.
I make fem auto seeds in my shed to give to friends that are not interested in growing a regular plant.

I have a shed that would kill regular plants with the cold in the spring and the extreme heat later on.
The autos handle it like champs. I had a regular plant in with the autos and it got too cold for too long. The regular plant got powdery mildew.

I thouight the whole seed crop would be mucked up, but the autos resisted the powdery mildew.

I like to smoke on some good auto occasionally. It has a different cannabinoid profile, so it will get you really high, just because it is different.

If I were to smoke a doob of Mexican Shwag right now, it would get me ripped because I am not used to it.

Overall, I would not grow autos for me. I have enough experience to grow great regular plants.

That being said, I have heard a lot about autos being low yielders. While they do not yield as much as regular plants, I have personally pulled 5 and almost 6 ounces of bud from a auto super lemon haze. Auto big bud will produce more, but big bud is not that strong.

I got over 6 ounces from 2 lowryder2 plants under a t5. They were left over from a breeding project.

I do not like lowryder2, it reminds me of shwag too much. The super lemon haze auto was great. Stronger than many regular varieties and it tasted and smelled great.

In my experience working with autos they can be just as potent. For example the popular big bud photo; is 18%, it's a very good sure. Then take gorilla glue auto it can reach 24% just like many many other autos. I've had some unreal autos that have taken just as long and or longer then a photo. I've had autos take 4 months. And also I've had humboldt og kush: go way over max height in a 8 foot height space. Sog fixes that though. I've had autos that have produced up to 6 oz cured. As you can see I like autos. Do they yield more? No... but sometimes yes. Tangie matic is very healthy and can rival a basic photo. I encourage people to reaserch and try more autos. Autos all day

Very old thread from when autos were less commercial than today. Use the forums not google to post on current threads with us members that are still here :-)
