Outdoors... Animals & Pests!

Quick question for all the experienced outdoor growers! I usually do all my farming indoors, although this summer im thinking of growing some of my little girls outside. Everytime i have ever tried planting outdoors it seem like deer or some other animal eats my plants before they even get into the 3rd week of growth! I've heard of putting a pile of kitty litter somewhere close to the plants will keep animals away. I also heard of pissing around your plants but not to close to them. Do any of these methods work? Are there any other ways of going about growing outdoors without animals and pests getting at them? Any help would be greatly appreciated!:fire::bigjoint:

my buddy used a green mesh fence around his girls so the dear couldn't get them, they were well hidden from people so not much of a risk spotting the fence
