T Troyzkoi Active Member Oct 23, 2010 #6 Silica or sand or quartz is a trace element and only needs to be at 1-2 ppm in a balanced soil. Having higher organic mass in your soil will need and hold more elements, so if you have a high OM feel free to add more than 1-2 ppm.
