On 2nd day in brown paper bags...

...and getting a kind of hay smell now.. so i guess something is happening - wasn't much of a smell at all yesterday

I dried them for about 5 days before bagging, stems were bending kinda easy but not snapping - i left a bit of stem on each bud to prevent them from drying out too quickly, I'm opening the bags and giving them a little shake to try and prevent mould, still have my exhaust fan running in the tent

Just wondering how long more i should leave them bagged before going into jars? i dont want them getting too dry

i could be wrong but in my experience, once they smell like hay your cure is over and theres no coming back from that.

personally i NEVER use paper bag, i ALWAYS dry too much using it. i usually hang the whole plant (minus the roots) upside down for at least 5 days and immediately into the jars after i dry trim the leafs off checking the jars several times a day until they stop feeling soft.

i have a nice outside crisp after 5 days and the stems dont "snap" 100% cleanly, more like 70% breakage. after being in the jar for 8-12 hours they will be soft again and the lid will stay open for a half hour to an hour and it will be closed up and the burping process will be restarted every 6-8 hours for about a half hour until the buds start to feel crisp again. that process goes on for about a week. the second week in the jar will be burped once a day. dont forget to rotate the buds inside to get even dry/cure every time your burp the jars and i only fill them 1/3rd to 1/2 way full.

you can go to the pet store to buy a $10 hygrometer in the reptile section and that should take most of the guess work out of the curing.

Your fine OP ....that wet grassy smell will go away if you cure correctly .....I cure large volumes at a time and paper grocery bags are my go to for the first portion of cure...then I go into food grade buckets and or bags ....GL

Not trimming leaves helps slow the drying time down. Slow initial drying will make you think you're a hell of a grower. I like 5 days minimum and a few more is best. Ambient humidity is a huge factor. The plants begin to cure through slower drying and when mine are jarred the leaves are not crispy and never get crispy but more leather feeling. Like leAves on native flowers in a drought. I vape so further drying is needed when grinding buds.

ended up jarring the buds after 6 days - crispy on the outside, stems tough to bend but not cracking

after about 16 hours in the jars, my 2 hygrometers are reading 59% and 60% - so possibly left them in the bags a day too long but will see if the RH rises in the next couple of days

thanks

^^ thanks, i have some but not sure if will use them this time, i want to do some side by sides with the bovedas at some stage

my RH is staying around 59-60% - at the moment im getting this smell i always get, the closest smell i can relate it to is a faint mint or liquorice smell?
I will burp the jars for about 15 minutes every day until this clears, im pretty sure i had this on the last grow as well

You overdried the buds if the rh is stable for 24hrs at the current rh%. I do a 3 day net dry, then into sealed buckets for another 4 days burping 1x daily for 45mins at 75* and 60%rh. Then I to mason jars, burping daily until rh is stable.for 24hrs at 55-60%rh.

yes in hindsight i probably should have jarred 1-2 days earlier

is there any advantage to the boveda packs at this stage?

Yes and no
I have about 200 used but still good packs? I haven't used them in over 3 yrs. Some say they absorb mj smells.

Since your a bit over dry, they can help. But to rid the hay smell, you still have to burp. This will also keep drying out your my as well.

this is called fermentation. you are fermenting your cabbage when you smell minty licorice. happens when anaerobic bacteria begins to flourish on wet plant material starved of oxygen.
I keep a dehuey/ac/baseboard heat in a old grow tent with a drying rack, I set it and forget it, buds never see bags or jars and are always stinky all the way through and ready to use in about 2 weeks, 3 is even better.
