UPPER MARLBORO Md. (Reuters) - President Barack Obama made a rare appearance on the campaign trail on Sunday with a rally to support the Democratic candidate for governor in Maryland, but early departures of crowd members while he spoke underscored his continuing unpopularity.

With approval levels hovering around record lows, Obama has spent most of his campaign-related efforts this year raising money for struggling Democrats, who risk losing control of the U.S. Senate in the Nov. 4 midterm election.

Most candidates from his party have been wary of appearing with him during their election races because of his sagging popularity.

Let me get this straight. People wait to go through all the security needed to enter the auditorium to attend this Democratic rally that that Obama is going to attend. Then they walk out when he starts to speak. In my opinion those were not Democrats, but some asshole Republicans wanting to upstage the President, and make it appear he was losing support amongst Democrats. They are stupid enough to dream it up. Oh, and by the way the unemployment rate in September dropped to it's lowest level since 2008. It seems that Obama must be doing something right, although a Republican will never admit it.

You do realize that when someones unemployment benefits run out they are counted as back to work don't you?

There are lots of empty store fronts where I live , and it has been that way for six years now. When I start to see some of them start back up and employ people that is when I would believe things are getting better. Until then things are still pretty belly up. imo

FWIW this disproves the idea that there is less unemployment.

People like beaverboy are so stupid that they will argue that it is people retiring from the system, what buck doesn't understand about math though (ASU math major=stupid) is that if you are decreasing the denominator, the graph would go up, not down. So if you were counting baby boomers retiring, then it would skew the graph higher, not lower.

Example: 270 million people have jobs, 330 million total population of working able people (Example only not real stats). Start decreasing the working able people # which the 11 year Stromfront veteran claims would cause the downturn. Oh look, it does exactly the opposite of what self proclaimed math major says it would.

270/330=.82 270/310=.87 270/290=.93 270/270= 1

when people stop receiving unemployment and they keep looking for work, they are still counted as unemployed, dummy.

for the record, the oregon coast has had lots of empty storefront, but not just for the last 6 years. the decline of that area has been ongoing for decades now.

you're only unemployed if you're actively looking for work and don't have it yet.

otherwise, you are classified as something more accurate, like a marginally attached worker, discouraged worker, retired, student, etcetera.

So how exactly are people counted as "unemployed"? Do they contact employers and ask them how many people came in looking for work that week? Do they randomly call people and say "Are you looking for work?" Do they count the ads on Craigslist and then somehow see how many people respond to them. It seems like it would be rather difficult to figure out how many people are actively seeking employment.
