I'm not saying it should be easy, but over the last few years its only gotten harder. Anymore, a college education is a necessity for anyone who expects to have a decent career. If you have more than one sibling, your parents will have a really tough time putting you through school, and you'll have to take out loans. By the time you're even looking for work, you're already deep in debt. And if you're like me, you'll graduate with a bachelor's degree and be unable to find any jobs near where you live that actually pay a decent wage and provide health insurance. And no, I'm not an art history major, my degree is in biomedical engineering. Now, we both know the government is not entirely to blame for these problems. Still, the Republicans are acting as though there's no problem that tax cuts won't solve. At least the Democrats have ideas.
Now I will tell you one reason businesses aren't hiring people, and it's not high taxes. In the US, employers typically pay health insurance, and health insurance costs are skyrocketing. If you were expected to pay those costs for your employees, would you want to hire more people? I live near the Canadian border, and so much manufactured stuff comes here from their side. If you're a manufacturing company that needs to hire a lot of people, you're much better off in Canada, where you're not expected to pay your employees' health insurance costs. Taxes are higher, but it's hardly a deal-breaker.
And I'm not advocating that the government step in and give everyone "free money." But the government does need to make sure that its citizens are able to afford to live here, and right now, they're not doing that.
