New Medicinal cannabis patient with children.....what are your thoughts?

I'm not sure where this topic belongs, but I guess I'll just start here.

I am a new patient and just started my first grow. I also am a single parent. My question is: How do others handle the question of medical marijuana with children? My kid isn't old enough yet to know what it is. But still, we are a bit concerned about what to say once he starts getting into junior high (or probably sooner). I'm sure plenty of folks out there are dealing with this same issue. Maybe this should be a sticky somewhere. It would sure be great if there were a section where parents can talk about parenting stuff.

I would handle it exactly the same as how you will discuss kids who take prescription drugs for recreational purposes. The main difference is that they can not kill themselves with cannabis.

Past that specific issue, I would educate my child on the concepts of liberty and civil rights vs. tyranny, as that is just as applicable to the situation. Your child must understand the importance of discretion until the laws and the enforcement of them reflect open access.

If you are religious, perhaps discuss how politicians can outlaw the creations of god. If an atheist, just discuss how illogical and insensitive the politicians are.

Good points. I was also thinking of it in terms of alcohol. Children grow up all over the world watching their parents consume alcohol and many times get drunk. Since alcohol is so much more dangerous than cannabis, one would think that the taboo would be shifted. But it's not.

No, and it is even harder when at public school they still tell kids that cocaine, heroine, and marijuana are all terrible drugs that will ruin your life and kill you...MJ only ruins lives because of the law. So we have talked about how some things they tell you at school aren't necessarily fact, but in fact political propaganda...Which my oldest child can understand, since he is pretty into politics, he is just starting Middle School this year, which is what we southerners call Junior High I guess...I think he'll be alright. I hope...I feel as though I have given him the correct information...but I guess only time will tell.

if they see the plants tell them they are plants "herbal plants" and leave it at that and once they are old enough be honest keep it from them but if you cant anymore be honest its your herbal medicine that makes you feel better,as long as the plants arent growing in the middle of the living room and never medicate when the kids are present you should be okay,

I agree with all of these suggestions. My son has already seen my plants even though their put away, and I told him exactly that. I explained that they were for medicine and now he keeps asking when I'm going to get the "sap" out to make my medicine. It's pretty cute. We've explained how secrecy is important and he is real good about not talking about it. We tried to do the "they're only plants" thing, but when these plants have their own room, water, and lights; it's kinda difficult to hide the fact that these plants are somehow more special than the other house plants. So for now he knows, 1. that they are special, 2. that they are for medicine, and 3. not to talk about it. I'm ok with that for now. Oh, and no, I never medicate in front of my son, never!!!

when my kid asks me a question i give him a straight answer. it has worked very well.

Hopefully you can explain you are using it instead of a more harmful substitute so they do not lump
pot in with oxy and think they are ok to experiment with oxy`s etc.
Other than that it is a medicine like any other and should be locked away.
The problem is I bet lots of med users also abuse it for fun in front of the kids which undermines all
the bs you just told them about it being medicine. Now they will not believe you about the oxy`s
Probably a little extreme but you get the point I hope.

Sounds good and I'm not saying anything bad about your child but, children do talk to their friends about what their parents do. Harmless conversations without forethought, a slip of the tongue. Sooner or later you will run into the the age old addage of "Billy said his mom does it" . Ok so billie's parents don't do anything but perhaps his mother likes to gossip. Soon several people know and some asshole is calling the police. Your house is raided! Now what??? Even if you have a legal grow the door is then open for many evil ideas looking for a place to bloom. A most difficult situation. I wish you the best of luck!

i have severe MS and my son knows its the only thing that reduces the muscle spasms enough for me to walk. i am not affriad to tell my story. i think being affraid of such a helpful medicine perpetuates the taboo of it. i want to educate people starting with the next generation. also the local law enforcement in my area follow the state law for registered patients. i also do not smoke in the house or use my medicine anywhere near my child. i understand your caution but children will repeat anything parents say. there are plenty of other things i dont want him to repeat LOL. i want to share my story with all who will listen.

well throw another plant of non pot value in there and then the plants wont seem so special. my plant room has a couple different plants

I really like that suggesting. Thanx. In fact, my peppers haven't been doing so well out in the garden so I've been thinking about doing them indoors. My grow room would be perfect.
