Youre just keeping them hydrated long enough for them to root. Carefully look at your plants each day. You will get a very good idea of what a wilted, dehydrated plant looks like.

You have to keep them moist. Your photo clearly shows the outside was too dry ie its a much lighter colour than the inner part of the plug.

And yes of course its a factor. Rapid rooters are like sponges. They wick water. Thats part of why people have to you to put a tray underneath.
