My Veggie Garden

thank you MP. and im sure yo cand find some good soil around. i bought 2 .2 yards worth of compost witch is a huge amount of dirt for only 80 dollors. if my regualr place was in stock it would have only bean 22 but all well, its really good dirt and pretty cheap for the amount. but i can see how growing in florida would be hard with th hot and very humid weather u guys have down thier
Yeah... I made the mistake of skipping watering my plants for one day, and a few of them were ready to pass on by the next morning.

I have a few sunflowers that have gotten huge, but when I did this, they shriveled up and were way beyond "droopy". I watered them twice the next day, and now they're back to full strength. The sand causes huge amounts of water to drain in just a few minutes. It's no good.

Alright here we go. I started a veggie garden this year because i couldnt grow my own meds in the summer so i have a grower for the time being. I miss growing weed, so i started my veggie garden to keep me occupied, its not near as satisfying as growing weed though. I am also using the garden to further my knowledge on plant life and what they need and what not pretty much plant life.
My soil is 40% top soil and 40% organic compost and 20% humice. I also had to add a few bales of peat moss and black golds organic compost as well to fill the boxes up all the way, the soil also comes ph stable.

Garden specs: 2 raised beds each 4 ft x 10ft x 2 1/2ft deep. I have copper tape around both boxes so no slugs get in cuz we have alot and so far no probs.

PICS.
#1. Raised bed 1, contains 1 cayenne, 1 bell pepper 3 rows of radishes and i have already harvested these 1 time. 1 row of onions, one row of lettuce, and then at the end we have some cucumber, lemon cucumber, watermelon, and cantaloupe.

#2. Raised bed 2, contains 4 tomato plants theri small because i just replaced the last because they had root rot so i pulled they were 4 ft tall already to but all well. also is 3 bel pepper, 3 cayenne, rows of corn and under the corn is green beans climbing the corn. also have a few jade cuts i theri starting to root. also some mint i found so i pulled it and put it in a pot in my garden.

the other pics explain them selfs. the only prob i have is aphids but theri not to bad but bad enough to attract ants. also just discovered spider mites on my corn so i am going to go buy some lady bugs to eat them off. oh and the pic of the brown water is water and a bag of aged horse shit. i added 2 tablespoons of molasses to it also, now what i read was to just let it sit for a few days and then use it ina diluted mix, but this shit is way stinky and has a layer of film on top of the water. is this normal if any one know. my plants seem to love it though.

any questions or advice is always welcome, and i hope i get at least a few followers.:joint::joint::blsmoke::blsmoke::peace:bongsmilie:eyesmoke:

my bed that has tomatos, peppers and corn get watered every 2 days because the soil holds water pretty well but not to where it is a bad thing, my other box has to be watered every day because it has smaller plants with smaller roots near the tops of the soil so it needs water every day. sounds like its kinda hard to grow where your at. we have had a really weird summer so far here in oregon, but we are finally getting to normal temps.

thank you HOle, and dont worry about the rep its all good, glad you stopped by to check out my garden.

Thank you to all who have checked out my garden so far.

i will water my garden right before night fall so its all cooled down and nice and moist for the ladies, i will make sure they stay around, we usally have a few thousand of them on our tree in the front yard this time of year cuz that tree gets aphids bad for some reason, but the year has been weird and still no signs of them. and for my matos im not sure, i did have to 2 cherry tomatoes and i believe to early girls, but they were replaced with plants that were started by my g ma and she didnt tell me what kinf they were when they start to produce i will have a better idea of what they are. the lady bugs come with nice instrucions onhow to release them and when. and if theri is fod supply their when they leave they just might come back next year

well guys, unfortanuly i had to pull my tomatoes again as they were showing signs if blight, also i just found out that once a plant has blight that u should plant any tomatoes ,peppers, or potatoes in the same spot or near the spot because the fungus can stay active for up to 2-4 years in the soil and ruin crops every time. and my corn seems to have a prob it self but im not sure as t what yet.

Mcpurple, your garden looks great! Nothing beats fresh veggies. I'm glad you know to keep the soil wet for the lady bugs-- many people miss that important step and they fly away.

In regards to your original post, most ants won't harm your plants. There are some who believe that that their tunnels actually help to aerate the soil and also bring up soil holding nutrients to the top. Other say that they destroy root systems with their tunneling. I don't know which side is correct but I've never had any issues with them destroying my gardens. Though if you start to notice them hanging out with aphids you'll have a problem. Some ants actually cultivate and protect aphids because of their sweet secretions and as a source of food. It's not a good symbiotic relationship for the plants.

Some fungicide should clear up your 'mater problem. I've got an heirloom tomato plant, called a Mr. Stripey, that got ripped in half during a bad storm a few weeks back-- I was so pissed! It's just now getting back to where it was before, and has started to flower. Here's a pic. You're gardens look great! Good luck to you, cheers.

thank you for the info, i figured ants werent to bad. and i have pulled all my tomatos due to blight, and yes i have aphids as well that i can see the ants eating off of, i need the lady bugs i just havent got them yet due to low funds all the time

Just be careful with ants and ladybugs. The ants typically defend the aphids from any predators-- including lady bugs. I wish ladybugs killed ants. Good luck.

I found a big ass red and yellow beetle on my sunflowers a few minutes ago!

Dusted them with my "bug killer" dust and hopefully that will knock out any bugs. Also saw a bee hovering around it this morning when I watered her.

That's good that they eat those black ants. I've got a meyers lemon tree in my greenhouse with some small black ants-- maybe I'll unleash some ladies on them. More than anything I've got a bunch of bastard fire ants and they bite and kill off all of the ladybugs the cross their paths-- and bite the hell out of me too! I have zero love for fire ants. Thanks for the insight on the black ants McP. Cheers.

anytime my freind, and ya i dont think the ladies could handle a fight from a fire ant. and the lady bugs didnt fully take out the ants they just aided, i use lady bugs as a preventer and also to get rid of some pests

Great looking garden man. :)
thank you very much.

Great garden. I've got a bit of a fruit & veg garden going at the minute. I got into gardening oh about a month after the ideal time to sow my seeds had passed so it could have been so much better than it is. Still, my garden isn't bad and i've had a few pickings already, I have a HUGE Courgette plant (huge and ridiculously tough not even hale stone in it's early life stopped this thing) that has given me some of it's fruits to chew on, as well as a few strawberries, bits of salad leaves and i should be picking my first French bean and Chillies very soon. I have a pretty big space to work with so i'm in the process of planning for next year. It's gonna be good! Good luck with your garden mate!

Mcpurple your garden looks sweet as hell man. It's set up perfect for square foot gardening...I noticed you really didn't have it set up square foot style. Looks great! I am going to build some raised beds this fall.

thanks for stoppin in. and ya they are good for square ft gardening, but i wasnt sure on how to do that and what the benefits of it were, can you enlighten me on the benefits if you can. and good luck on building yours mine only cost about 40 dollors for all the wood and nails, its some what cheap to build. i was gonna do one huge one 10ft by 10 ft but changed my mind to do 2 smaller ones. ill have more pics tonight, the radishes are almost done for the summer cuz its to hot so after they are pulled no more of them. i harvested 2 cucumber the other day and many more to come, theris like 100 on one plant, and many cayennes, and i have 4 bell peppers but only one is making peppers.
