From what I can tell with his set up, and forgive me if I'm wrong but, I think a six pack of cfls, 3 more light cords and 3 splitters would probably be more cost effective. This doesn't look like the hi-tech grow room we all wish we could have.

I'm gonna split the difference here, OP... If you can afford a proper grow light, go with one of the HPS's you've been told about. If you're on a budget, add more CFL's.

Shity light. Get more
the answer, lies within your question.
just one cfl isnt enough lamp for a plant....
Whatever you do, the guys I quoted above are right. You need quite a bit more light in there.

How many plants are you trying to grow? Just the one in the pic, or are there more?

Photo taking tip: Stand back, at least another several inches to a foot from the target.

I guess they don't look that bad (not for a single CFL bulb anyways), but I bet those buds are quite fluffy\airy. In a pinch you could just get a few more of those CFL's to finish them, it isn't worth it to cut so early when you don't absolutely have to (4 weeks isn't enough bloom time). You could use [virtually] as many CFL's as you can\want, it is just that they are somewhat significantly less efficient than HID lighting is (i.e. it is going to cost more money to run them) and high wattage CFL's do indeed get hot.

Don't necessarily listen to everyone telling you to go with strictly high pressure sodium lighting, as metal halides are great as well... they actually put out more PAR (light that plants can harness for photosynthesis) and more closely mimic the spectrum of sunlight. A good HID ballast will allow you to run both HPS and MH bulbs. If you just want to grow for personal and don't smoke a lot of bud, 250 watts is the minimum I would recommend, for one or two smaller plants. If that is the case you probably don't need any high output ventilation or even an odor filter. Consider your environment and personal situation of course, but a small HID light may be cooled with a regular duct fan (a 6 inch, 250 CFM booster for instance) and a couple plants aren't likely to smell very much.

so if i grow two plants with a 400/600 watt hps and use the low stress bending method to have smaller plants with more yield would i need a filter or ventalion or could i just av a standard fan ( would it smell the house out without one )
