My Organic Experience

I am new to this fourm, so I'm going to start with my growing experience so far. I decided to go as "organic" as I could mainly so I wouldn't have to buy expensive chemicals and fertilizer continuously. My light source could not be organic, though, because I have no outdoor space to grow. I started with 4 seeds I pulled out of some half decent weed I bought. I put them in some dirt and put the pot in my basement window. While in my yard one day, I noticed my plant was easily visible from the sidewalk outside, so I decided to use some lumber I had leftover from a deck project last fall to build a place for growing my plants. I purchased 2 fluorescent shop light fixtures to use as the light source.

Looking back, I can see that I really did not know much about growing indoors. I have had outdoor vegetable gardens for years, so I was equipped with basic supplies. I planted my seeds in a half potting soil half homemade compost mix. 3 out of 4 seeds sprouted, and, of these, 2 were female. I grew these using 2 T12 4 foot fluorescent fixtures. In hindsight, it was not nearly enough light. The plants were not bushy and just grew straight up. No harm, though. I got some smokeable weed off of the first plant while the second plant was flowering.

I came to a realization that I had neglected security through a tough lesson. Somehow my brother-in-law somehow found out I was growing and harvested my 2 plants when I wasn't home. I can't prove it was him, but there is enough circumstantial evidence to convict in my opinion. Luckily, about 1 week before I had cloned one of my plants to continue growing. I knew after this I had to improve security. I got more lumber, locks, and lights and made an all-around improvement. I now have my third flowering plant and it looks great. Thanks to new T5 fixtures, an enclosed space, and white paint, I have a much better grow space.

What was the moral of this rant again? Oh yeah, through my own experience, I have found that if you have the correct environment; lighting, temperature, humidity, and ventilation, all you need is potting soil and compost. My current plant got a little nutrient burn because I went a little crazy with the compost in my plant container. Next time I'm trying about a 1/3 compost 2/3 pitting soil mixture. I found that I don't need chemical fertilizer going this route. If I do need more nutrients, I put compost on top of the growing medium and water it and hope the nutrients get washed into the medium. Also, I have cloned 3 plants without using any rooting hormones. I just don't want to spend the money on chemicals that I have found are not necessary.

I composed my first two plants after I harvested the flowers. I recently found out the leaves and stems do contain THC. I want to try to use the leaves and stems off of my latest plant to cook with. Has anyone tried this? I am going to peruse some other forms after this, so I may find information tgat I'm looking for. Thanks for reading my rant.

Any feedback or suggestions are appreciated.

your not going to be able to bloom very well with t12's. t5's are only really good to veg with if you want it to go slow. florescent lights dont give off enough lumens to produce much. there are people who grow with compact florescent lights, however they are happy with relatively low yields. unfortunately when it comes to lights and ventilation there aren't any shortcuts or cheap answers i can come up with. you could look on the indoor sub forum cfl growing, you can start under your t12s they are perfect for cuttings and seedlings. just no bueno for veg and bloom. some people have, they just end up with stringy stretched airy plants that lack density, and have meager crystal production, it takes photons, which come from the sun or an hid light.

as for your nutes, if you upgrade a light then your plants will take up more nutrients and at that point you might consider brewing compost tea. it makes a huge difference but only if your plants have enough light to use the food you give them.

You are right about getting light buds with the T12s. This is the first plant I have veged and bloomed with a high output T5. So far so good. I have calc7pared my lumens/sq ft and found out I'm coming up short of what's recommended. I have about 1400 lumens/sq ft. I have read that 2000 - 3000 is recommended. My latest plant looks much bushier and full than my last one, so I feel I'm moving in the right direction. I was just going to ask in a different forum if there are better fluorescent lights available. I will research the CFLs to see if I want to invest in them.
At this point, I don't want to move to MH or HPS lights because I'm too lazy to modify my setup to include more ventilation to cool the space. At what point will better lights help my plants absorb more nutrients? Do you think there will be a return if I invest in more lumens? Thanks for your input.

I'm gonna have to ditto malignant, spot on.

Thanks for the encouragement DIY guy. I am far from giving up. I've been improving my setup since May, and I only intend to make it better. I will consider an upgrade after I see the results of this latest plant. It should be ready around Thanksgiving or so.

i get roughly a pound per run. 4 plants, 1k mh and 1k hps, co2 and in 7 gal pots in a 5x5x7 tent. 4 vortex fans, and ozone gen to cover the smell. my soil mix is usually happy frog, ocean forest, and a big coco block, dolomite lime and i top with protein crumbles, earth magic, and tpp compost. very rich bacteria colony.. so i feel like its definitely worth the upgrade.

What a setup. I feel like I could get to that point over a few more iterations. Right now I have about 18 sq ft separated into 2 halves; one for veg, one for bloom. I have 2 4 foot T12 fixtures and one 2 foot T5 fixture in the veg side around 12500 lumens. One the bloom side, I have one 2 foot T5 fixture and one T5 4 foot high output fixture around 12700 lumens. I have some very small vent fans (4" personal fans from Target). If I upgrade to hotter and more powerful lights, I see height as my major obstacle. My grow space is only 5 feet high and my basement isn't getting any taller. I don't see me growing tall plants in that scenario.

How long did it take you to get to the point where you've git a sweet setup like that, Malignant?

A few years, it used to be Much bigger and through out the house, but were looking to relocate, so no need to do anything that isn't easy to be taken down. I bought a hydrohut, and a growzilla. The light bill is only 260-300 a month so put as much in as I could. I dig it, so when we start back up again its going to be 2 2k growzillas per 10x5ft on each side of a room, fans down the window.

... my soil mix is usually happy frog, ocean forest, ....
Maligant. OF an HF are the only soil I have available to me here. I have used OF with about 2-1 OF to Light Warrior. Happy Frog is available to me now a little cheaper and I bought a bag it has a great feel and look to it. It appears to be a nice soil I could use straight up for veg. I reuse soil in flower.
I've yeah to find a good comparison of HF an OF. Where do you use each and why?

Thanks,

snew
