HPS does not equal more heat. 200 watts of CFL will put out the same amount of heat as 200 watts of HPS. The reason people tend to think CFL's are cooler is because all there heat is spread out, with an HPS all the heat is coming from one direct point
:) thats handy to know, i always tought HPS or MH lights operated alot warmer than CFL's + with the amount of lumens HPS or MH make compared to cfl they are alot better , just as i think about it like that id prefer to grow with hps or mh now cos they are about the same temp. but i have to grow with CFL now because of my stealth conditions...

if i had more money to work with and needed to be less stealthy, ide probably go with a 70w hps on the top and line the cfls up like halfway between the top of the soil and the height you expect your plant to grow for side lighting and assuring buds get the proper needed light.. maybe we can set up one of those spinning dessert displays also and so we dont even have to rotate our plant to recieve even lighting

did you guys see that thread 70 watt hps vs 40 watt cfl he said the hps was 79 and the cfl ran as hot as 86

idk about that one, i understand 70 watt hps arent very hot, its only 70w it couldnt get that hot, but less then a 40 watt cfl i have a feeling that there was another reason why the hps was so much cooler then the cfl bcuz i was running 2 26 watt cfls with hardly any ventilation and the bulbs were cool enough to touch / grab and my avg grow box temp was around 75-76 (26' width x 14' debth x 20' height), then i bumped it up to 6 26 watts and a 4" high velocity fan exhaust and passive intake and my box sat at 80-81 and the bulbs were a little hotter to grab, not unbearable tho

Yo Snafu, you said that you were gonna get the 70w HPS and a Y splitter at lowes, Ive already tried it. The bulbs they sell there wont fit into a normal socket. It has to have a ballast. WICH ARE NOT AT LOWES! For some odd reason!?!?!?! (sorry It happend resently...Im still mad about it, lol)

Check HTGsupply.com, They have cheap HPS systems for cheap : )
