My first 1000w+ Grow (LED+HPS)

This is my first grow over 1000w's, so I'm very excited to see my results. I love playing with different lighting combinations to try and get great results; but, everyone compares yields in terms of pounds per light (1000w). So, this is my first chance to compare my 1000w combo lighting against all those that use 1000w hps.

Currently, I'm running 630w of LED lighting (450w panel + 2x90w LED UFOs) and 400w HPS totaling 1030w.

6 Plants went into flowering (12/12) on May 18, the other 4 smaller plants were added 5 days later (10 total). This is the progress from week 1 up to day 21 (June 6th). (More photos will be added as grow continues)

I'm using a combination of Advanced Nutrients and Dutch Masters nutrients for bloom, growing in soil.

Strains
: Grandaddy Purps x2, ChemDog #4 x2, Pre-98' Bubba Kush x2, Blue Dream, XJ-13 (Jack Herer x G-13), Hindu Skunk, and Green Crack

Let me know what you think! :leaf::-P:leaf:

They look great man. Do you see a difference using the Ufo? I was thinking about getting one to go with my 400w.
I do see a difference for sure. I ran 4xUFOs and a 400w last run (760w) and got almost exactly 1lb dry. That was my first LED/HPS combo grow. Also, the LEDs seem to make the plants grow healthier. I recommend getting at least 2 UFOs with your 400w if you plan on adding any. Most UFOs are the same quality now, so Ebay is your best bet on price. Oh, and they produce almost no heat at all. I have 4 running in a veg tent, with one house fan cooling, with no problem.

I'm still not a huge fan of LED only grows; but as a combo lighting, they seem to really boost the plants. Every LED combo grow I've done has super dense buds with loads of resin.

Day 27

The ChemDog is producing a sea of colas, the Grandaddypurps and the Bubba Kush are already pumping out some serious resin; they're looking like 7-8 weekers, the Chemdog probably 9 weeks.

The XJ-13 is on day 22 and is reaching above the hood of the 400w and a second arm is touching the 450w LED (it's already been tied once, too). I'm not sure what to do with it! I've grown the strain before but never under this much light, the stretching was quite a surprise. The colas are massive as it finishes, so I'm just hoping it starts bending itself down under it's own weight soon, haha.

The other stretching strain is the Blue Dream (DJ Short's Blueberry X Haze). It's trying to outgrow one of the UFOs. I've already had to raise it a few inches.

XJ-13 is stretching past the hood! I added a 42w CFL (not pictured) a couple inches above the top to provide some light. (below)

Update:

Fungus Gnats! I noticed small white larvae swimming around whenever I disturb the soil by watering. I put down yellow strips for the adults and sprayed the top of the soil with a Neem/water blend to get the babies. Any advice? Think this will do the trick?

I noticed a slowing in growth, I hope it's just around that time of the harvest where everything pauses before exploding, and hopefully not because of gnats eating the roots up :(

Pic coming sometime tomorrow for a week 6 update.

Here's some pictures I snapped this morning, just before the lights went out. This is week 6 for the ladies (5 1/2 for a couple).

From left to right: Blue Dream, Bubba Kush, Chem D., and XJ-13 on the far right, stretching toward the CFL I addedk, since it outgrew the hood.

im doing about the same thing with a 600 watt led + 1000 watt hps in a tent. i think led+hps is a wonderful combo as the hps give the light pen led lacks an led hits the key wavelenghts of light the plants just love. i saw a big differance after adding my led, its good to see im not the only one!

I'd love to see some pics if you have them! How does the 1600w of combo light yield for you? If I could cool my tent better, I'd rather have a 1000w instead of my 400w :bigjoint:

Excelent grow. I dont know much about LED's but I would love to try and improve on my 400w HPS by adding some led's. Is it possible to build a box yourself and how are they on power consumption??

It all depends on how big of a panel you want. When used properly they produce just about as much yield, watt for watt, as HPS (from what I've seen). If you're trying to replace an HPS with a smaller watt fixture, you just won't get as much. They are, however, very very cool compared to HPS. Comparing my 400w hps to my 450w LED, the entire LED fixture won't even get as hot as a 400w hps ballast, and no where near as hot as the light itself.

So, it will save you energy on cooling and allows you to get more wattage into smaller areas with less cooling; but, don't listen to the LED people advertising that a 90w fixture outperforms 400w HPS blah blah. It won't. But 400w LED vs 400w HPS, LED has slightly higher initial price ($600 for my 450w), but with heat and never having to change a bulb, I'm saving a lot more money.

If it weren't for my 400w HPS, I could cool my entire grow with house fans; no noisy intake fan.

I'm tossing 9 of my girls into the flowering room today so they can get an almost 2 weeks head-start on my next round. 3 are lined up around the edge of the grow, and the other 6 are under a 90w UFO pulled out of the veg tent in the corner of the room.

Only 8 are pictured, the 9th is next to the camera out of the shot.

Also, here is Chemdog #4 (opposite side of the room) starting to chunk up! 6 1/2 weeks.

Lastly, the gnats are all gone. A little Neem on the top of the soil and 48 hrs with a No PEST Strip in the room and not a gnat or larvae in sight :)
