My current efforts: AK-47 and Somango

LOL, I was beginning to wonder whether I need to post results, as
no one seemed to care. Sniffle. Kidding!

...but you are hardly late.

The Somango is one delicious smoke.

I have harvested the rest of the crop and when the buds
are out of the tent, where they are drying, then I will be
moving the new crop into the tent.

I will make sure that I have your thread in my list.

Take care, and thanks for dropping by.

P.S. Here's a "teaser":

Awesome grow Java. That somanga looks incredible, great coloring, really frosty! I believe I read that both of these, the AK and somango are autos? I know so little about autos, I was under the impression that they didn't like to be topped or cloned. I have a couple green-o-matic freebies from a friend that I was gonna try outdoors this season so I am going to try and find out some more info about autos.

Anyway great grow java. Subbed and Peace

Funny u mentioned the Green o Matic strain. Ive grown her a few times and shes a true auto flower, finishing up in like 50 days from sprout. she stays pretty small not getting taller then a foot and a half. very strong indica, tight compact buds. i even got some pics still from when i grew her. very nice strain.

No, the autos were my first serious crop, that proceeded this crop.

It was C. ruderalis, and the autos thing that got me to give growing
a serious effort. That Crop went well and included Sweet Tooth, Low Girl,
and Biodiesel Mass.

When I was starting that grow, a friend sent me AK-47 and Somango regular
seeds to work with. So I grew out them as mothers while the autos finished.

I then took 50 clones from the AK and Somango mothers, and they are
what you see in the tent.

Now, I decided to flower the two mothers in the corners of the tent, using
two Kessil 350s directed at them. ....this would allow me to lower the HID lamp
past where it would exclude the mothers. (as in the photo)

I stripped all lower growth on the mothers to allow the SOG to get max light.

BTW: I took clones of these as keepers.

As to Pressure Cookers, we are all just a tad freaked out at all the negative
attention that the Boston bombing has brought to our favorite and most
necessary sterilizer.

I will be along with some AK harvest photos....I am taking too long on that.

Take care,

JD

P.S. Also, they got one week of Veg light and one Veg nutrient feeding before
being flipped to 12/12. I should add that the clones got max time under the
dome before I used them, so they had something of a head start.

Hello all,

Well, I am already jarring the AK-47 so it is time to post some harvest
photos. Note that I have 26 of these things, so I did not take all that many
photos. Note also that there are three plant's budsicles are in a water cure
and one other budsicle got a spot of mold and was manually dehumidified
and will be used in a butane extraction.

This pretty much ends this thread, though I may comment on the curing
process, as this is something else that I am still getting a feeling for.

Take care,

Also still getting a feel for curing, so any process descriptions you could share would be greatly appreciated.

Holy shit that's an impressive harvest!

Thank you for the good word.

Curing seems to be something that one learns the feel of....but starting off
with a formula and then watching carefully how things go, is still a good start.

For my first Crop I used a trick that friends recommended and I went from
hanging, to paper bags, before going to jars.

This time I used a fan 30/30 minutes on/off and they got to where I think
that they are ready for the jars after a couple of days...but I used two more
days with them hanging without the fans before I cut them up for the jars.

One thing that you will want to do if you have not already is to buy a small
hygrometer that you can put right into the jar. I am seeing 74% in my AK 47
jars so I have some work to do. I want this last stage to take a few weeks.

Take care,

JD

Wow! gotta say that looks a seriously nice grow dude! I thought the pics were cool as well - u can readily see how bountiful those flowers looked! I thought those Kessil lights seemed to work well on mothers too - i've only heard of them before, but u seemed to have got them to work like a focused spotlight beam, which is quite interesting.

Also, just wanted to ask, how did u go about sexing the original regular seeds during their veg & at what time/growth phase did u take the subsequent clones? I just liked how they all looked healthy & uniform - was a nice sea of even clone canopy!

Also, my input on curing is, for small/medium buds (1g to 3g dryweight-size) i tend to do a 10 -14 day hanging to dry & then do minimum 14 day curing in jars; by which time i find they're fully smokeable & have mostly 90% of whatever the full flavour, taste, & effect will end up being. For any larger buds or whole branches (my main budsicles never go over 8 inches, so i don't mean whoppers sadly!) i'd do 21 days drying & minimum 15 - 20 days curing.

Just in the main i never like too quick a dry as otherwise i often find curing will be spending its 1st week of work correcting any rushed errors made by drying, instead immediately being able to work its own sweet magic! Tho as u say, is each to their own method for sure and i gotta feeling u aren't likely gonna be disappointed whatever happens!

Hey RWBG. Thanks for dropping in, and for the good word.

These were given to me, but were "fem" seeds, and so I knew that
they were going to be female. This also explains the uniformity of the
crop, as all AKs came from one mother plant and the Somangos from
another single mother plant.

There were a few "runts" but this was due to that plant being started
from a clone that was just a bit slower or weaker than the others.

Now, what you really want to talk about are "pre-flowers". You can see
some good photos of those on my Crop #3 thread.

I started that Crop with "regular" seeds and had to identify and cull
males before I could take my clones.

Take care,

JD

I know we're talking about the post harvest steps in my thread as well, but might as well add some traffic to your thread while we're at it.
Is there a certain humidity the drying room should have? Or is the regular 40% house humidity okay? And buds should be dried in the dark, correct?

Javadog

Well-Known Member
In the dark, yes. That is certain.

40% will do nicely to dry things.

Too fast drying is to be avoided.

Move to jars and start burping when the stems snap.

....these are a few of the things that I read and am using.

Take care,

JD

P.S. I see that KC chimed in, in your thread. lol

I've read a lot of different takes on the subject. Need to just find a source or two I can trust and follow their lead..

Looks good. I just had a quick question. I plan on buying two grow tents later on in the year a 3x5 400w MH for veg and a 4x2x5 with a 400w Hps. I wanted to grow 2 plants for every rotation. In a 4 or 5 gal pot and do the scrog method. I wanted to try and get a HP all together. Will this do?. Is the gal size to Small for this. I see everyone's plants and grow ops and I thought it was about time for me to start soon as well. Just looking for all the advice I can get. Thanks

Hey Chief,

Welcome to RIU.

I am hardly the most experienced grower here, but I can
tell you that those tent sizes ought to work fine for a two plant
SCROG. I have SOGed so far, but look forward to doing this
as well.

Do you have your breeds purchased yet? What are you thinking
about growing?

BTW: I might make the Veg light a 250 W if I could make the
Flower light 600W too.

....LOL, but then again 600W may be too much for a 2X4 tent.

(I just think that you should prefer giving the flowering tent
the advantage, power-wise, rather than balance the power usage)

Good luck,

JD

Thanks for the welcome.but no I haven't purchased the seeds yet. I was thinking about Attitude seed bank and they would be indica or indica dominant. And yea that makes sense about the 250w lol. Is it tru that each gal is a foot that the plant can grow? Thanks for the tip
