What's the best way to keep contamination from getting on your tray? I know all of the procedures for being sterile and whatnot during inoculation, but can they still get infected when you put them into your bulk trays, case and layer an whatnot? Is location of the tub important?
 
Make sure your containers are sprayed and sterile. Then have your jars ready to birth and move them using sterile tools as soon as your pasteurized spawn reaches room temp. The quicker you work, the better. Mix all tubs with sterile tools, (no casing is needed with cubes) and wipe messes with paper towels instantly. Place each tub in it's own black plastic garbage bag, then open and start fruiting in 10 days. :D
 
But what I have noticed makes the biggest difference in fighting contaminations is the amount of colonized mycelium jars you use and how much spawn to turn it to. 1 jar will not make 1 monotub. Since it is a race vs the mycelium and contams, you need more mycelium on your side. I usually have about 3-4 quart sized jars that are half filled with colonized wbs which I mix with each monotub.

Also, just to be more safe, make use of Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in your misting bottles. I use a lot, but see others use minimal. It evaporates into H2O so you won't be getting chemical residues on your fruits. And also it helps me think that I am doing the best that I can to fight these contams.
 
No hydrogen peroxide is not harmful to your fruits.
Some people spray hydrogen peroxide on their cakes right before the dunk after fruiting.
Then don't even case at all.
I dont know if it makes a significant difference though, but people do it.
 
humm well thats good to know thats my only concern is doin all the steps and when it comes down to it getting my shit contaminated
 
Yeah contamination sucks.
But if you follow proper sterile procedure 100% of the time, you should have nothing to worry about.
Sure you might lose a few jars here and there, but that's nothing compared to the other jars.
 
My mono tubs are going to be in my room, which definitely isn't the cleanest place in the world :P
 
yeah i hate these old ass houses its hot as fuck in summer and cold as hell in winter but i dont got to pay rent so i cant complaine really
 
Would y'all say like a 5% to 95% peroxide to cold water solution is a good solution for misting?
 
i think peroxide is already diluted when you buy it. i use iso alcohol in a mist bottle. but if you use alcohol, or anything else for that matter, be sure to properly label it. i misted a bulk cake with it once thinking it was my water mister. it made the cake dry up and bruise pretty hardcore

yeah. i meant that i used alcohol on accident though cause i didnt label it. plus i had quite the healthy buzz at the time. but i ended up tossing the batch.

ive found that the organization is pretty helpful in this though (ex. labeling containers with content/dates, gathering all supplies before any work starts)

i start by gathering everything i need up and make a "workstation". then i try to limit air movement in the room as much as possible and mist all the surfaces and tools (including me) with alcohol. after that i spray the air with a lysol type stuff to kill airborne bacteria. this all works pretty well for me

Yeah, I intend on getting a glove box here soon. I was just wondering about protecting bulk trays against contaminations.
 
#1: Clean materials. EVERYTHING. The tub, the gloves all your tools EVERYTHING. LYSOL is your friend.
#2 Location, Location, Location! The placment of the tub is KEY to success. as well as being the proper Temperature the tub should be covered (Mycelium needs higher Co2 to colonize...garbage bags work great.) and placed in a CLEAN room.
#3 Pasteurization of substrate. if your Substrate is contaminated, you lose EVERYTHING. period.
