i have a few friends from okinawa, it is right up there on the travel wishlist. i hear it's seriously beautiful there.

to all our kind subscribers: i just wanted to point out that we have a hero in our midst ^here^, a volunteer to the relief effort in japan. may all our good thoughts keep you busy and safe.
Thank you, but I'm no hero. A fool, perhaps.:wall:

I've heard the same about Okinawa. From what little I saw, it was beautiful! I finally made it onto the island of Honshu. I'm staying about 40-50 miles west of Fukushima, just outside of Niigata. It's dark here now, so I can't see much, but I'm told we are getting some elevated levels of radiation, but no threat to health. In the morning we will get briefed and assigned to where we'll be working. I'm tired as all hell, but I can't sleep (probably because my body thinks the sun just came up). lol! Anyways, I'm here and I'm going to see if I can get something to eat and maybe a drink to calm my nerves.

well, buddy from said room apparently used something called 'shooting powder' that hubby's making 'humna humna' noises about - i myself know nothing about what it is or how it works etc. etc. buddy swears up and down that it's the reason he pulled a decent yield off that room. which he did. (yeesh, hubby and i both help with plant maintenance there and we'd've started spraying milk a full 2 weeks before buddy did anything - and milk is one of our last resorts after dramatically lowering rh and a thorough cleanup, like you guys). me personally i couldn't get out of there and into the shower fast enough after that trim. imagine my co-worker's surprise when i gave him all my gloves and scissorhash.
i hate sulfur as well. *if* the need for it arises it doesn't go beyond vegging in our room. *if. gak.

we also have a big mushroom farm closeby, although we get most of our dirts (and everything else, really) from this one crazy nursery where they have *everything* from cacti to exotics to citrus to koi. it's family-run and they are really knowledgeable. hubby says you can tell it's good dirt by the smell. the last round we grew we did a side-by-side, mixing soilless (one of the sunshine mixes - i forget which one - whichever one doesn't have the nutrient charger in it) half/half with horse manure and mushroom compost. we both preferred the mushroom compost product, on our og it definitely gave the pine-y-er, sativa-y pheno. you know, pointier buds. THAT smell. we also feed with grotek's nute lineup which is another one of those old predictable 'friends' - i would be lost without vitamax and calmax for troubleshooting. their products are either organic or earthsafe, although apparently they have a new 100% organic lineup which is only available in canada yet that i find intriguing. i wrote a thread in the organics section asking if anybody had tried it but nobody bit.
as soilless growers making the transition to living dirt, we're trying to get to know our additives as manageably as possible, and so far we both approve of the local mushroom compost.

does your wife know anything about citric acid extractions? there was a guy whose brain i was picking here but he dropped off the face of the planet over a week ago and i still have questions....
I'll ask her about the citric extract. I don't know half the stuff she's got going on. I just know she needs more bud, she needs more bud, she needs more bud.

sounds like she has a veritable zombie army of hungry, happy people lined up for her edibles ("....NEED..... MORE..... BROWNIES...."); i'm kinda jealous. if i ever start a dispensary of my own i'd like to do strictly edibles. i don't know that that's been done here, and legally it seems like the safest route, "trafficking"-wise. easily 90% of the medicard holders i know have their doctors recs for eating (i've found that doctors here are somewhat reticent to prescribe a smokable), and, considering the labour and cost involved in edibles, i would challenge any LEOrg (*kno~cking woo~d*) to try and tell me i'm not providing a health service but being a "drug dealer".

as it stands now i either need a bigger freezer or more clientele in order to be able to have more than say, 2 batches of baked goods in stock.

oh yeah i asked hubby about our a/c, it's a plug-and-play 5t, which apparently is good for now, but we're going to have to supplement that with something once it gets hot out (he says for baverbs you want to allow about 1/4t per light).

Kitty, you're spot on with the edibles. The Los Angeles Health Department recently decided that there was too much food being sold without their blessing at dispensaries. They now require that all edibles be prepared by a carrier of a current "safe food handling" certificate, in a health department approved commercial kitchen. This put 95% of the edible chefs out of business overnight. As it turned out, may wife has the cert and a friend with a commercial kitchen. She also knows a guy (husband) who can get her plenty of green. So, a company is born. We're just wrapping up the lawyer stuff and she can start cooking.

The beauty of edibles in Cali is that the law says you can get paid for your time, but no profit. So, I can get paid to grow it, and she can get paid again for the food prep and distribution. I actually sell the green to her. LOL. She doesn't even get a break!

good to know. i managed to get away without a foodsafe for so long, i really should think about getting it. seeing as how the rest of the world (including here) is gearing up to follow in cali's footsteps, law-making-wise.

gearing up to attempt dulce de lece, take 2. the last batch turned into fudge. i still have no idea how, since i didn't add any fudge-like ingredients.
in the absense of my citric extraction guru BadKittySmiles, i've decided to try out this glycerin tincture i keep reading about. if i can remember to photodocument it i'll post some results, maybe in a thread of their own.

I think an extraction technique thread for edies is totally needed. I asked wife about citrus technique and she didn't know. But, you got her all exited about it. She starts jumping around talking about how much sense that makes and dives onto the computer Mission From God style. I haven't seen her since. She may have your info tomorrow.

Her goal is to stay away from sweet treats. She's got some "Garlic & Green" infused olive oil going that may be a winner. She's also interested in the edies for folks with food allergies. She can't have gluton, soy, or corn; and figures that there's alot of folks in the same boat. Check out Yak Edibles in Oakland, Ca. They were the first ones to really brand name the edies market and are doing quite well. The wife's other pet peave is using buds...not just trim. Which is gine cause me and my crew are big time pollen ponies. That's right...we ride the kief. Ever tumble enough Haze to get a good pile of pure sativa kief? OMG!

hint: there's a thread here on riu, in the cooking with cannabis section, by BadKittySmiles. (you shoulda seen me reading that thread. i then went to poor hubby and told him we *needed to go buy citric acid powder and soy lecithin *immediately and he was like, "? ? ?") my specific question with this method is that he mentions you can use bud or hash, and uses hash in the demo, but doesn't give any sort of "and then you filter out the plant matter [here]" guideline. he says you mix your citric powder, canna, and optional lecithin together, add vinegar/booze and *bang* you have acid, but to try not to handle it at this stage while the acid does its thing. but then you let it sit for a couple days, and i'm wary of leaving plant matter in an acid extraction for that long. call me crazy. i suppose if bks doesn't turn back up soon i'll just have to make myself some bubble to try this with.
this is perfect for you guys; you can do it with straight kief, and then you can add the resultant tincture to *anything. personally i revel in my sweets (i don't drink alcohol so i think it's fair to consider sugar my chosen vice even though i know it's poison, and never the white stuff) but i know from experience there isn't enough allergy-aware food in *general, much less with edies.

conversely, i spent days at a time in an uninsulated tent in the canadian winter toiling with a tumbler - long story - kief literally leaves a bad taste in my mouth now; something i find highly unfortunate. hopefully someday i get over it; i'm finally able to smoke it again so there's hope.

Ok Kitty...tent...winter...tumbler. Wow. I smell a book deal. "Tales of CannaLabor" or "Growing Pot...the real story". Just the one about riding up to the barn with blackout shades on is so cool. I get this vision in my head. How long you been working at grow ops?

Anyways, I never get sick of your little tales. I would love to hear the extended version of all of them. I really do think there's a book, or at least a series of articles there. Start jotting down some little notes so when you retire you can do this big ass bio on "My Life Under the Leaf". "CannaTales for the CampFire".

BC is a special/strange place, from a cannabis perspective. i've been whoring my services out for just over a decade now. as a freelancer (like me) one doesn't tend to get as much steady work, but if you marry yourself to a big op, yeah the work is going to be steady but you probably just sold your soul for the duration of the job (or longer). so that's the double-edged blade you walk along, working for others. i'm fortunate in that i've almost always managed to maintain *something* of my own.
and yet, opportunities abound here. by the time i was 17 i was rubbing shoulders with characters most folks here on riu would give their joint-passing-arm just to *meet (although it wasn't until a few years later that i found out who they were - by then it had almost been too long to be retroactively starstruck), taking notes, gleaning information, occasionally having olympian perks fall into my lap. i've just been extremely lucky in this sense though: just by dint of having grown up where i did, when i did, and being a reasonably disarming girl, i've done stuff like trim for [a cannabis cup winner] and been given handcuts from [a world-famous breeder or two]. and there are easily hundreds of girls like me, and even more dudes. although i think the girl-to-boy grower ratio is waaaaaay closer here than what i've seen represented in forums like this. maybe it's that this environment of goddess-worship and freeflowing knowledge makes it easier for young women to cut out teeth in the industry, idk.
i have had visitors from your great nation take me by both hands and tell me, with tears in their eyes, how heavenly it is here for potheads and did i know just how lucky i am to live here? (yes. yes i do.)
i've fielded at least 6 marriage proposals from dudes who wanted so badly to move up here. (most of them from michigan).
this is the sort of place potheads all over the world dream of someday escaping to, and i grew up here. lots of stories.

and yes, you hit it on the head: i'd like to retire first. ;)

Kitty,

Sounds like you're living an amazing life. It's great to know that people like you are out there living life. When you're ready to write your biography I have a friend who's a bio author, and with a prod from me, would probably help you write it and get it published. Really, dear, there's a story here; and not just one for canna-culture. Here in Cali, med-mary is on the news daily. It's a hot topic for the general public and not just us potheads.

In the meantime, I would read a thread devoted to your experiences any time. Cheers.

dammit, i wrote you a response and then forgot to hit 'post'.
suffice to say: thank you very much for your kind words. i'm already ruminating a story idea so i may take you up on your offer sometime, but for now i have to wait for a few nice people to kick the bucket first. ;)
i've actually considered going domino-harvey-style with a "do not publish until after my death" clause just to avoid the b.s.
and honestly, i can't stress enough that it's been less 'living life' than 'rolling with the punches' (and sometimes not very well... it's not all idyllic here; i've fallen down from time to time, both from tripping myself up and having the rug pulled out from under me, just as would happen anywhere else). as young, impressionable potheads, our first local head shop was marc emery's first hempbc. that place (although i didn't know it at the time) was *crawling* with pot celebrities and folks who would go on to become pot celebrities. they made it easy to become entrenched in 'the movement', and the rest is literally history.
