Applebees is on the verge of eliminating waiters. Mechanization even in the service economy.
They put self serve lines in the grocery and home improvement stores and look how much that has helped. I can check out 4 times faster than some minimum wage union employee can do it for me. Works out better for me....

I think the Chili's thing might catch on. I hate to have to wave down a server to pay and leave.

The "Waiter Terminator!"

One solitary drone (Manager) to deliver the food and drinks.

Think of all the money you will save on tips. No more sarcastic comments from a pimply faced teen, no more waiting for the check!!
lol I can only agree, but I don't even go out to restaurants to eat. I'd much rather cook my own meals even on a date night.

It's just to further my hypothesis that all human jobs can be replaced with robotic labor. Robots don't need heath insurance, sick time, vacation, personal time, 401k, social security, unions, holiday pay.

I pose a question. What happens when mechanization of the work force reaches the point of elimination of human labor?
You don't read si-fi? Don't follow the AI advancements? :) I have been obsessed with this for many years. In fact, I was almost ready to toss my Computer Science hat into that ring. I say almost because a wise councilor gave me the heads of about what a blue collar thing robots, will be. This was in the mid-80s.

They had just opened an automated Japan auto plant. But, the councilor had a horror story about the death of a repairman. Seems one those 1 arm, wide reach spot welders had pinned him....bad enough, but then decided to run the row of spot welds on him, which was fatal.

I went with the A/C and sterile Computer Lab, to begin my journey. It was not a bad choice, as we see. Robots are still blue collar jobs for the Techs. A lot safer now.

The latest thinking in the AI dept is that they need to take the idea of machines, deciding we are the problem, very seriously. This is new in science. They rightly see, I think, the real problem, heralded in Science Fiction, like I, Robot, Saberhagen's Berserker series of book, etc.

No Empathy in AI, yet invented. But, this is the focus, now. It looks like at first glance and what they sorta say, is that they don't want humans to be afraid of Bots.

But, if you go a little deeper the main guys are very concerned. We are at the point where we want some decision making from our new critters. But, what is a "good decision?"

Is it the 3 Laws? No....good try, but that could lead to alienation of the Bot as the Overlord Protector of Mankind. The only answer so far, is to not teach them they are different. We have to invent a sense of sameness, ie Empathy, in them that makes them part of us, as they see it.

They have to be more like the dogs, that think they are people. :) They have to be us and we have to be them. Mankind becomes Cyborgs or we create our Robot Overlords? A strange choice.

answer: in such a world you would need far less humans...if you owned the robots...but the robot financiers would inevitably be a tiny minority based on the current state of concentrations of wealth...therefor to 'lessen the suffering of the many' and in the name of human superiority 'the many' will need to be trimmed from the tree'...I've heard NASA has developed plans for such ;)

............
and who is gonna take that job, and how much will they have to pay him to support his meth habit, since only a sketched out tweaker on a serious amphetamine rush could serve all them tables, at least until he freaks out and starts stabbing customers, or his heart explodes.

Not in our lifetime. My opinion comes from being at the forefront of mechanization

CNC machining. I run lathes that do both turning and milling in one setup
but you are still going to need human eyes to set up, run, program and monitor the machining

I for one, welcome our new Mechanical Overlords.

fuck it, lets go full 1950's with the Automat:

mmmm dibs on the 6 year old egg salad sammich.

or if you prefer something fresher...

Last time in Korea I watched them prepare cat. They just throw the live animal in boiling oil and that makes the skin come off very easy, the cat usually screams and cries until after the skin is removed.

No one cares.

FYI those cat catchers are scams, the jaws aren't near strong enough to grasp a wigglin kitten, I know, my kids spent $40 in quarters trying to get a cute tabby once.
