Maybe a dumb newbie question, but here goes....strains from seeds

Howdy folks, first post.

I didn't find this in any of the threads I looked at (and I looked...) after several weeks of lurking, so here goes.

A friend and I smoked some stuff (ordinairy smoke from a dealer, type unknown) , which we agreed came on pretty strong at first, in a jagged, hyped, and unpleasant fashion before settling into an acceptable buzz after 30 mins or so....also this strain seems to bring on a nervous sort of high. It works, but poorly.

My buddy pulled out a bud that he got as a present, told me the strain but I forgot the name (will get it when I see him next), and we tuned up. This was a much gentler high, tasty and pleasant, although strong, and I definitely preferred it.

So, my question: When doing a home grow, will the seed/strain I use determine what sort of effect I will get from the bud, or is that pretty much a crap-shoot, given the variables of grow practices, differing soils/nutes etc?

I have never grown weed before, and would like to try, if the payoff is the kind of weed I like to smoke. To be frank, a lot of weed I have tried is either too strong, and/or has the effect of making me feel socially ill-at-ease, which is definitely not my normal MO. Others I have tried work for me just fine, and treat me pretty well, with no ill effects. I have found street purchases to be pretty mucha grab bag, and thus far my luck hasn't been very good.

So does the seed/strain determine the buzz?

Stop being so DUMB, DUMMY!

Totally kidding. Good question. The strain will absolutely determine the effect the bud will have on you. Sativas tend to give a more "racy, up, anxious, cerebral" high and indicas induce more of a strong "body, couchlock, sleepy" type high. Hybrids could lean either way or a nice mix of both.

Factors like environment will play a role in yield, taste, smell, thc% etc. But the overall "effect" will be more determined by the strain.

Peace.

Short answer...yes, the strain/seed determines the buzz
(damn that was fast...)

OK, Meta....now I am guessing the overall THC content is on me as a grower, to get the most out of a plant. But the strain is pretty much the key to the kind of high I want...so if I don't grow it right, I'll need 3 hits where one would usually suffice, right?

I think what I will do is find a good strain coming from the dispensaries that I like, buy some seeds of the same strain, and grow from that. Pity I can't do that in my home state, but we haven't decrim'd yet.

Hey, you guys are great getting back with me this quick.

Not necessarily. Strain is the most important factor in potency as well as the type of buzz/high profile. Even a poorly taken care of plant can produce too notch medicine. And even the best grower in the world can't grow hemp that gets you high. It's a balance. Obviously if you provide the plant with the most nourishing environment, you will get the best outta that plant, but on a whole, I'd say the genetics play the bigger role.

Also, remember, that seeds are all different slightly, even when they have the same parent plant. Much like if you were to have 10 kids with the same woman, they would mostly share dominant genetic traits like hair color and eye color, but no two would be identical. For that you need to work with clones.

Strain will have an effect, on what kind of high you get. Some environmental factors do too. Not every person gets the same high, even if you are smoking parts of the same exact plant. Some parts are at different maturity points, in their grow cycle. Clear trichomes have a more head high, while amber trichomes have a more body high for me. Some parts have higher proportions of cbd to thc cannabinoids . Some parts have different terpene and flavinoid profiles. Some parts have different exposure to light. Since light degrades thc as well as other components of the plant during growth and harvest. The way it is ingested has an effect on how it affects the recipient too.

I like some sativa hate others. Same with an indica.

Order a few different seeds, enough to get freebies, and you will have a good selection.

For a new grower it might be easier to grow one strain since some strains are big eaters.

On the other hand growing multiple strains gives you a bigger selection to figure out what you like.
Plus you will learn to read the plant faster.

I havent seen anyone mention harvest time. harvesting early compared to late will also affect buzz. Until you learn how to grow good, I would stick with one strain at a time. Will be easier

Hmmm....probably a good idea. I don't know much about what I am doing, and was thinking about getting a small grow tent with LEDs and exhaust into a carbon filter in order to stay totally covert (even to the other folks in my house. By small I mean like 20x30x60", enough for one plant at ta time, I guess. Hell, if I knew I had the right strain, I could just take a clone a month before harvest time and keep that going, replace the harvested plant with the clone, and keep rocking. Like I say though, I need to stay utterly covert.

I wonder if those fans are noisy, or if the filters keep the smell down?

This site (and you guys) are a God-send, in terms of the info that I will need. Even though I am facing into my first grow, I feel pretty confident.

it also depends on the grower and the way it has been growen to how long it has been left be4 it was pulled alot of factors come into play like my mango kush compared to my mates mango 2 totally diff highs and tast

What kind of high are u looking for? And for what purpose?
Recreational, mostly....nothing medical. I play music (banjo and bones) and sometimes like to get tuned up (both me and the banjo) and pick. A nice mellow laid back high is what I prefer....sometimes I find a particular strain will leave me feeling isolated from folks I am with (good friends who love me and and whom I love), self-conscious, and socially awkward. I would like to avoid that and just get nice and mellow.

I should also add that I got away from weed for around 25 yrs, smoking only abt 1x every 3-4 months or so. Now I am pretty much a one-hit wonder, that is generally all I need to get tuned up. Guess I'm a cheap date :bigjoint:

(Now I am doing abt 1-2x a week)

Probably an indica or high cbd strain just look at the seed website they will tell u about a particular strain. Would stay away from hybird or sativas.

man you could read here all day but unless you're pointed in the right direction you're wasting time. Do as @Jus Naturale says and read up on affects of strains, Sativa, Indica, hybrids and also though even though something might be indica it may be completely different high than a different indica… if you're going to be popping seeds I recommend getting the right kind of strain for the high you want but also get something popular (doesn't have to be expensive) thats been around a long time so you can find plenty of info available on it.

Thanks..... Do you have a favorite in the indica line?
If going from seed, I can't recommend Master Kush x Skunk# 1 enough (Mr Nice Seeds), check out anything crossed to purple urkle, I really like my Royal Purple Kush, keeper, if you find that indica pheno you'll be in love.
