Making the switch from Soil to DWC!

Good morning Rollitup!

Thanks for the continued feedback. I did come across that Cobalt Aquatics pump on Amazon as well but I feel like there are better options out there... I found this on amazon "Aqua TOP Powerhead 158gph 8W" --- I can't post links yet but just search on Amazon.
It has an optional Venturi intake which is great but I don't think this is exactly what I want... this pump is required to be fully submerged. I'll browse Ebay and report back and see what yall think.

@aquaman Maybe this video will clear things up for you. Go to youtube and search "DIY Waterfall RDWC system". I can't post links yet I need one more Like haha.

I dunno though, that pump seems like it allows to water to heat up regardless the body's not built right.
The pump is 7.5w (not much) Its magnetically driven which is much less friction and typically a much much longer life, very cheap and easy to fix if needed. What design do you recommend? I agree for heat purposes on a bugger pump there are be better design options.

I understand how the waterfalls work used them in several different applications before. But like i said with a single site RDWC it is the same thing only the waterfall is in your res instead of the site bucket. So if you put the plant in your res bucket it would be a waterfall. When you add multiple sites that would change.

Would it be overkill to use one of these 27gal totes for a single plant connected to a smaller 5gal res outside the tent? I have a couple leftover from when I moved apartments. I read that having a higher volume of water helps prevent pH swings and allows you to leave it unattended with less chance of something drastic happening?

You'd be better off using 2 of the smaller 17gal sized ones so the res and site are the same size.

Will the fact that the two buckets are different size create problems? I thought as long as the pipes are big enough there shouldn't be a problem.

I do have multiple of those yellow/black totes so I could just use two of them but it'd be a fuck ton of water for only one plant haha.

More water, more stable and I would say better but also more required heating/cooling, more nutrients to reach nutrient levels although it won't make my difference to maintaining them a res change adds up if need bit also less need to do them.

More is better but at a certain point the cost will exceed the value of the gains

Here's a really simple way to do it. 1" vinyl tubing and a Eco 66 submersible pump with a small 3/4" tube going into the 1". It does require an airstone. Last pic is a previous 5 bucket rdwc setup using the same Eco 66 and 1" tubing. Never had a water temp issue or an issue with roots clogging the tubing. I can give you a parts list/ build instructions if you want. You can make the tubing in between buckets/ totes whatever length suits the situation. The ph didn't fluctuate very much, but it was easy to correct with the res.

I love the trash can! Haha that's great.

I have a 5gal bucket and the 27g tote that I think I'm going to use because I like the idea of things being more stable with the increased volume of water. Plus, needing to change the res less often.. The gallon jugs of the GH Flora Trio is relatively cheap too. I'm only running one plant so the huge amount of water might seem unnecessary but I need to scrog because of height restrictions so running DWC would be too much of a pain, and I don't have a lot of free time due to work so running two 5gal buckets requires more attention. I'm still waiting for this brutal AZ summer to end before starting up the next run so I have some time to think over some of this.

I appreciate the input!

Alright so I'm in the planning stages of my first attempt at RDWC and I want to make sure I understand how to build my setup correctly. I will be growing in a 2x4 tent using a 27-gal tote as the site bucket (the one with the yellow lid and black tub) and a 5gal bucket as my reservoir which will be placed outside the tent for easy access. I plan on using a scrog since height is a limiting factor so I figured rdwc would suit me best. I intend to use a square 5gal bucket just so I don't have any issues installing the bulkhead. I understand many people don't have issues using rounded buckets but I want to minimize the chances of a leak!

Speaking of bulkheads, in another thread I saw @Airwalker16 talk about using threaded bulkheads so you can simply glue a male adapter to the pvc pipe and screwing it in rather than gluing it straight into the bulkhead. Is PVC the easiest way to connect the site and res?

I like the idea of using a waterfall instead of airstones so I want to run a line from my water pump back into the tent and through the top of the 27gal tote. What type of tubing is the best for this? Would I better off routing the water through a manifold and split it into two waterfalls on opposite sides of the tote to distribute the DO or will one waterfall in the middle be enough? I only intent to grow a single plant to start off so I don't forsee the rootball becoming too dense that it can't get oxygen to the middle of the ball. So I'm torn on 1 vs 2 waterfalls. I hope you can imagine what I'm trying to say haha.

You build waterfall sites in each bucket and the 2-3" gravity returns bring the water back to the reservoir. A manifold built out of 3/4" PVC splitting to 1/2" soft vinyl to connect to each elbow in the buckets works best for even distribution.

Also PVC works fine for the large tubes but I think black ABS is a better option as most all bulkheads are made from it already.

Yeah I understand each site gets a waterfall but the 27gal tote is really wide so I'm wondering if I'm better off making a split and having two waterfalls, one on each side of the tote as opposed to a single waterfall.

What tubing is best from the water pump --> manifold? Soft vinyl as well?
