But if you are going to prune anyway (a personal decision) then just do it. People who defoliate seem to do it in two stages. Before the flip and toward the end of stretch.

You can't easily change what's in the soil now. Dark green leaves really look like over ferting so I wouldn't give anything but water and see how they do. Whatever fert you've given remains trapped in the soil.
