One guy on the internet said he used the sponge rubber curler inserts for womens hair. You can get them at Walmart and I tried it but I didn't have any luck. The frustrating part is that everything on the A/G is proprietary, you cna't get it from anyone else. I finally bought a pre-drilled Styrofoam starter tray from A/G and it's great for germinating seeds. It comes with 50 grow pods. I usually only use about a dozen at a time and if the seed doesn't germinate you can reuse the pod with another seed. They also have a smaller scale Master Gardener Kit that comes with new cages and enough grow pods for a couple of crops. My friends and I have tried a lot of different things and they just didn't work as well as what A/G designed. They did the R&D and their stuff works. It makes sense too because otherwise it's like trying to use Chevy parts on a Ford.

i scooped up a big bag of rockwool hydro cubes from home depot or lowes website for next to nothing. Theyre the tiny 1/4" or so cubes at most , and i just presoak them and put them in net pots around the germinatd seedling. rockwools a helluva invention
