Long Time Smoker, First Time Grower

Hello Everyone,

Hi y'all, I'm brand new to this site. A friend of mine recommended this site to me to further my knowledge of all things cannabis. I have been smoking the good green since I was in high school, and I'm 40 now, but about a month ago I started to grow my own. There were many factors in deciding to grow, and reliability was a major part of that decision. Waiting on people who are waiting on people gets old when you just want to go to your happy place. The other factor was money. That shit gets expensive when you smoke at least a 1/4oz a week, and that is if you can find a reliable source.

So with all that in mind, I decided to start growing my own. At the moment, I have a bunch of seeds, but I decided to try planting a couple seeds so I can learn. Out of four, only two sprouted, and only one is alive and strong. Is it too early to sex this plant? This plant is 31 days old. Is there a way to determine the strand of what this plant is? There are so many different names out there, it's hard to keep track.

My current set up is very basic: 150W Light, potting bucket w/bottom water fill, and an oscillating fan. The potting mix is Miracle Grow (it's all I could find/afford at the moment).

If anyone has any advice for me, please post it. Thanks for all you help.

Impossible to determine strain or sex at this point. My advice is to buy as powerful a light as possible. If tight on funds suggest a light kit with ballast, bulbs and cheap relector. Light is everything. Everything else is second at best. Crappy or insufficient light will result in disappointment.

I do have another 150W light that's the twin to my current light. I didn't want to rig it up just yet due to cost of running it. Right now I'm in learning stages until we buy our house. I figure that by the time we get our house, I will have researched better ways of growing set ups.

Absolutely agree.

Got a money jar? Whenever I bought some smoke I put an equal amount of money aside, it adds up pretty quick. $40 a week gets you a good light in a couple of months:-D

I agree with what's been said about more light, but you have plenty of time to do that. I recommend people do their first grows as cheap as possible the first time around. Significantly less stressful that way and it makes it more about learning how things work than the actual results themselves. After a grow or two and more due diligence/research then you'll be in a good spot to put more money into it, should it be necessary.

Good advice and not just for new growers. KISS. It pays off in the end. Not fighting nute burn or lockout or etc.
