lights are lights

I was laughing so hard when I first read this thread. But then I really got to thinking about it, LEDs are the same whether they're made for growing or made for decoration. I checked amazon, and there are LED christmas lights that aren't just colored, but the actual LED itself (could only find the blue though, the red ones were just red colored) and you could buy a strand with 100 of them for less than $8 before shipping.

I really hope you keep this thread going and inform us as to what your results are. I'm almost thinking about trying it myself. People are laughing now, but who knows, maybe a few months from now half the people that read this thread will be lining their grow rooms with christmas lights, or just stringing them along their plants as if they were Christmas trees. Like another thread where people suggest using emergency blankets instead of buying the pricier mylar. Well, guess what those emergency blankets are made from? Mylar is Mylar, lol.

b i n g o + rep for you my friend i actually have some one who instead of idea bashing went and did some reseach
thank you my dude you saw past the fact that not all X-mas lights are colored covered lights. the ones that i am talking about go from clear to bright red or blue or orange when you trun them on and the are 1w 50-80 come on astring and they are like $10-$15 a string
my plain is to compress the bulbs so that all the lights come from one sourse like the UFO but not the price of the UFO if my thery is correct then the makers of led grow lights will have to come down on there prices fast.
they may not work good alone but my be amazing with cfls i thought roseman would have liked that fact but its clear he dosnot have time to read the whole thread he just talks loudly over everyone else

You see these at the same site?

Def go LED xmas lights and not standard. Honestly it's alot cheaper to go LED pannels...the old school pannels are hella cheap and have alot more of the same type of LEDs as these.

900 LED pannel for $100 Prolly alot more LEDs than either of those other options.

You shouldn't give up so easily. The fact that the panels are so cheap could prove your theory is correct. I imagine LED's have a very narrow spectrum, and so it's possible that grow specific LEDs are designed to best provide the spectrum plants need to grow. What if it were possible to do lst with a strand of these?

There's red ones too. I really think you need to carry out this experiment, In The Name of Science!

once more you are right ant i must not give up . those where some bright lights on that link. the truth of the matter is i will try something but it has to be low cost otherwize i might as well buy a panel . my idea came about becouse i thought that a panel was to costly but i have seen afrodable panels with my own eyes .the only thing that might keep me going is the fact that i can not just walk into a store and buy a led grow panel. for a person that may not be comfrotable buying them off the net maybe my light setup will work for them .kind of how and why i buy cfls now. theres like one store that sell grow need (lights and such) and they are to far and to exspensive. it is so ez to go to target or wallmart and get lights now insted of waiting and waiting and waiting for a light to come in the mail just to be brokin so then i would have to wait even loger to replace it or travel to far . i am not a farmer so cfls and led apeal to me for my small jobs. yes i do think i will still try them (x-mas lights) once in season i will buy them but i will need to stick to a budget of some kind maybe i should take the price of one of those grow panel like a mid level one lets say 300w and through in the price of over night shipment and handeling . and let that be the base of my budget thats a start. see if i can replacate the light with x-mas light...... lol..... who knows maybe someguy in a rule area who cant make it to the hydro store 100ml away or dosnt trust internet mail order or who like myself loves DIY(do it yourself what the net is all about anyways)he or she may love the crudely made light to inhance the already inuse cfls, may be it will help make the buds more dence. at worst, provided i dont burn down the house, i am just out a buck or 2 (more like 200 or less) but if i am right and it works (you know i think i am) then more bud for me hell more bud for us all

the more we know the more we grow. like i said before the internet was designed for free infromation trade for do it yourselfer make anything build anything learn it yourself. if it digital it should be free if you can hereit speek it see it. it should be free

Ide shy away from giving teatree the finger...he kinda knows his stuff. I think what he was getting at is that highoutput LEDs and regular LEDs dont compare. I'm having LED pannels made for me and I'm going with 5w LEDs...those on that big pannel are .1w? The intensity of the light has everythign to do with how far it's going to travel and thus the effectivness. those cheap LED pannels along with xmas lights will have to be pretty much touching your plants. but personally i dont see that as a problem.

thx for the rep.

I was about to tell him where he can stick his finger. Why bother?

I've decided I'll pretty much start ignoring posts that have zero punctuation. Why argue with a fool? So I can look a fool? Why bother?

Any idea how many lumens these LED panels give off?

Are well known hydroponic outlets stocking these LEDS?

Are scientists or horticulturists using LEDS to grow?

q1 no (lumens are only what the human eyes can see they have little to do with plant photo.)
Are well known hydroponic outlets stocking these LEDS?
q2 no (led are to new and they are still in there develpometal stage a lot of the clams can not be replacted or proven right now cfls do the same as led no diffrant the only good one are way to exspensive a 600w led will cost thousands compared to a 600w hps)
Are scientists or horticulturists using LEDS to grow?
q3 not yet ( at one point they weren't using cfls but now look you cant buy an aerogarden without one look at the yelds that cfls can put out one day leds when the science is perfected that all will used yes hps and mh will still be better and maybe even cfls but they are all tobig and comsume to much energy in large #s but not leds lets say on a spacestation were power consumption is a great issue the leds will be the best option or lets say a place where it is to cold to grow outside year round like where i live so i have a garden room and not just for weed but i have tomatos eggplants lattus greens beans etc. i injoy growing indoors and whatever helps keep my runnig cost down im all for i dont drag my plants in and out of the house with every saeson i stay in side in a control inviroment

leds have a long way to go yes but they are coming
