Kapton tape works just fine FYI. The thermal paste actually does most of the work.
 
Your sucking out a tremendous amount if heat from the cob into a heat sink that's held down by tape? Relying on the tim to do the work? Your not holding up some smd's it's a 36+v cob. Anyone who is short on the 2 bucks shouldn't be building lights. No offense. I think quality and pride in your work should be the number one when doing anything nevermind high voltage lights.

I kind of jumped the gun... I'm having a hard time finding parts in Canada... No problem getting more parts... Money is not a problem...
 
Not sure if notrhern grow lights or cobkits ships to canada. Cdi components Distributers has the complete line of cobs and accessories.

Except it's not really a tremendous amount of heat... only about 20W per. Kapton and TIM can handle it. Think whatever you want to think about it, I just wanted it to be on record that many people have done it and it works just fine longterm. Peace
 
Yes your on record with your attitude telling others tape is ok. Your 20 watt cob is much different then the next cheap idiots 100 watt cob. It's 2 dollars and you chose tape, good choice:wall:

I just re-read this (slightly less high) and I can sense the animosity dude. If you don't like being corrected, just stick to commenting on things you have direct experience with.

I wanted to reply to the last message but I didn't to try and keep the peace. I don't see any reason at all to not screw down the cobs properly. Only when you wrote think whatever you want my attitude came out. Understand there are thousands reading these threads and even if tape would possibly be fine in the long term it's absolutely not the proper and safest way to do things. Not everyone will take the time and care, not everyone will use thermal adhesive and to top that off with tape is just nuts. No one can say holding down a cob by taped wires is anywhere near as good as a cob holder. As far as my direct experience I'm running 34 cobs in a smaller room now and have close to 50 more set aside for future projects. But along with spending 25 on a cob I spent the extra on the holder. The only thing I can think is drilling and tapping into an active heat sink could be a problem for most. I also feel if that's the case then they shouldn't messing with these anyways. My opinion.

Fair enough man. I do hear what you say. I agree it's a much nicer finish with holders... I just wanted it to be known that it does work ok with TIM and tape. If you have ever tried to take a COB off a heatsink you will appreciate how well TIM holds them on!

I know you have built your own lights, but if you haven't personally used TIM and tape you shouldn't really say it won't work cos it works fine and peeps have been doing it for ages. Drilling and tapping (and the tools needed) could be a problem for some people for different reasons. Now that most of the passive heatsinks come pre-drilled and tapped there is no reason not to use holders, but back in the day when I built my lights things were different.

Anyway let's keep the communication open and without judgement. Grow on hombre bongsmilie
 
I think most that started in this learned from the Mars hydro hack. I taped the shit out of my first 2530 light too and due to cobs popping out of the holder at the last second I have had to slide and pry off many cobs. I hear you and feel you on all of this. Like you said thanks to predrilled hs now there isn't much need for tape. I'm more looking at the future builders. I have seen some real shitty work and who knows what people will do. Another forum a dude was talking about super gluing cobs down. If people push the holders that's one less potential failure point. I'm the CEO of ideal btw. o_O

Haha ironically it was the shitty design of the ideal holder that pushed me toward TIM and tape. If the BJBs had been available for 3590s at that time I would have bought some, but they simply weren't. A chip holder that requires an additional adapter in order to use a reflector... now that is some backwards shit right there lol.

There will always be stupid folks out there who cannot be bothered to research and we cannot save them all. Darwin would have something to say about that if he were still around.
 
too many safety patrollers roaming this section lately.if you dont have overhead fire suppression in your grow theres a good chance it will burn to the ground lol.the meanwells have short protections built in as well.if growmau5 would have been as scared as some of you guys none of us would have a clue how to build this shit lmao.i would think he and supra would be the authority on capton tape.not any of us that have been building panels and bars for the last year lol.
