What is becoming "obsolete" is spectrum deficient COB/QB lights.....
Even the led peeps are figuring out that narrow spectrum and lacking UV and IR is not where it's at.
Sure cannabis will adapt to it but you are missing out in so many ways.
Especially you No-Till growers, shame on you preaching superiority of broad spectrum nutrition availability over synthetics while deliberately restricting your plants light diet!
You certainly feel strongly about this.

Do you believe broad spectrum everything is better? I understand the sentiment, partial to it even, but I've never found studies that support/disprove the other camp. Can't COBs be mixed in multiple spectrums?

i think he is talking regular blurple leds. most ( not all) cobs 89-96 cri using citizen or cri chips. i have seen some mcobs ( multi cob) with uv blue red and ir chips arranged around a cri chip.

I have not heard of a cob or single smaller form factor single chip that covers all bases from UV through IR.
IR seems to be a huge player in plant form with many species of plants.
That is why a blank statement like "led beats hps", QB's are the best, etc. is just plain wrong.... There is much more to this world than cannabis and I am of the belief that a spectrum that satisfies a greater number of photosynthesizing species (like the sun) trumps "par electrical efficiency"
I feel confident those studies will come out in time. Probably about the point cannabis flower hits the $1.50 a gram retail price point and all these "LED Companies" have long since ran away with wheel barrows full of peeps cash :P

1.50 a gram comericaly but just like with craft beer there will allways be a nich for the quality home grower. As for light quality it is measured in cri. Nateral sunlight being 100 cri. Hps averages around 28 cri. Thats why i like the cmh the 3k lamp is around 98 cri and the 4k lamp abought 94 cri. I like cobs but they arnt that much more efficient than the cmh and the price tag....

CRI is for human vision just as lumens are
You can have high CRI and still no UV or IR :wink:

Not true at all. CMH is barely 100 lm/W and 1.9 uMol/J. A good COB setup can easily exceed 2.5 uMol/J. But the yeah, on the pricetag….
The problem is all the "efficiency" talk revolves around a narrowish band in the center of the electromagnetic spectrum, but to each their own.
Enhanced multi nm chip led is where it is going to be IMHO

No, its Umol/J - thats a direct photon count independent of spectrum.

My full spectrum LED lights have produced some of the best cannabis I've ever grown.

IR can be provided in many ways. LEC lights don't produce enough UV to make any difference.

looks like plenty of uv to me. all the way down to 375 nm
Now look up a sunlight spectrum and see what "plenty of UV" really looks like.

In fact standard sunlight contains already much less UV than was used in the tests to show that UV has some effect.

UV is not a binary thing. It's not "there or not". You really need a lot of UV to see any significant impact

thats natural sunlight. were talking grow lights cmh has much much more than hps, blurple leds. some cob can have more depending on the chips used. for that mater cobs can also have far red flower initiators to. wish i was wireing savy i could build my own.
