Large Soil Containers. Rubbermade? 55 Gal Drum? Others?

i live in cali and my last harvest was in oct/nov it was very small only 3 plants about 5ft tall but iv seen plants yield up to 5lbs in a 8 month season im not saying thats easy or possible to do every year only if the conditions are right

throwed? are you still doing your 5gal bucket / in ground experiment on root balls? i would like to mimic it over here on the west coast just to see if it makes i difference
Not using 5 gallon buckets. I am using 5 gallon grow bags. The grow bags I have are narrow but taller than the buckets, but they still hold 5 gallons of soil. I have some plants in grow bags and I have several in the ground. Most of my plants were germinated late Feb.27-28/March 1st. I figure if the root balls of the ones that are in the ground are the same as the ones that are in the 5 gallon grow bags then this will prove that 5 gallon is all that is needed for a standard 6-7 month grow. To be fair to the experiment I dug out a hole today that is 3 feet wide and 3 feet deep. Tomorrow I am going to fill it with my custom soil mixture of Evergreen Cow Compost, Evergreen Potting Mix, Pearlite, Vermiculite, Mushroom Compost, Green Sense Mycorrhizal fungi, Dolimite Lime, Azomite, and Kricket Krap Panzy Mate. After which I am going to soak it in the last bit of Fox Farm Grow Big I have with a bit of Super Thrive and Sodium Peroxide. Then I am going to throw one of my 2 Foot 5 inch KC Mangos in the hole. The KC Mango that is in the bag is 3 foot and is not filling that bag out at all. Surely if what everone claims is true then the Mango that I put in the ground tomorrow should have a bigger root ball since it has a "bigger container". It would be nice if you did a similar experiment so we can compare The South to Cali.

Ive used 20 gal pots before and had VERY Root bound plants in the past. this is why i do raised beds that have open but screened bottoms (for gopher prevention) and I have produced some monster girls that a potted or bagged plant less than 20 gals would never be able to produce. period. the bigger the roots system the bigger the plant, you got one thing right the earth is the biggest grow medium, but for my wife, mother n law, and my personal use we need more! alot more! same goes for others, we like MONSTERS! and a monster is what you see people like HODGE, FDD2BLK, TLD, DOUBLE JJ and a few others n here grow, check out their threads and you will understand why people are giving you shit. to produce a plant that yeilds more than 1lb, 5 gal of soil will not suffice its just plain an simple and the proof is in the pudding! im not bashn im just saying its more of a personal stand point on the yield you want. I do give you kudos for experimenting tho. I say you should try raised beds or even smartpots, you will see the difference and then think back on the things others have said to you and maybe understand it a little more! ttyl good luck on your grow!

You have any pics of the roots from your 20 gallon containers? The pic you posted show plants that are in the ground which aren't monsters. I grew in the ground last year and the roots were well developed, but they still could have fit in a 5 gallon bucket. I've never done raised beds, but I have 5 smart pots that I got for free when I made a big order at discount hydro, but they are only 3 gallon smart pots so I did not use them. Will put my next set of ladies in them to see how they work..... I agree the bigger the root system the bigger the yield.....but even so the ground hasn't shown to be that big of a difference than when I grew in 5 gallon containers on a 6-7 month standard outdoor grow. As stated earlier the experiment will show real proof via video at harvest. I should have taken pics last year, but will do so this time. FYI, I don't consider your plants to be monsters. My plants last year were around 7-8 feet...which isn't that far from what you consider monsters by looking at your pic. IMO, Monsters are plants that were posted in the earlier video. You know, the ones that require ladders and such. Also, I doubt you got 5 pounds off each of the plants that you posted.

This is what I consider monsters.....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWrIyevmsZM&feature=related
and yet these were not grown in a standard 6-7 month grow season. Now these do require bigger containers. My main gripe is ALOT of people try to get people to believe that if they use some ridiculous size container then it will net them 5 pounds EASY in a 6-7 month grow season or those that think a 5 gallon container is just not enough for a standard 6-7 month grow. No matter what you do you are not getting 5 pounds in 6-7 months. Now if you grow a plant to 6 feet INSIDE then put it in the ground in May/June then yeah you will have bigger roots and will need a bigger container. BTW, looking at the plants you posted earlier today in your other thread.....Some of the plants you posted aren't bigger than my current ones so how in the hell are you gonna have "monsters" when you are growing under the sun just like I am? The level of bullshit around here is amazing.

YOU might as well stop wasting your breath on this guy, he's not even growin' in the same climate as we are, and he obviously is not gonna listen, even though the pics are right here to prove it. I'm gonna show him at the end of this season, a bucket much bigger than 5 gallons, root bound as hell, and then maybe, just maybe,he'll shut up. I grew a plant 3 years ago, in a 30 gallon grow bag, and by the middle of July, it was so rootbound, I had to water it 3 times a day to keep it from crashing. I went and got a 60" kiddie pool, cut the bag off the totally full roots, and put it in there. By the end of the season, it was rootbound in the pool.....whatever dude.

And a s far as him saying no way your getting 5 lbs in 6 months...go look at my thread hard head from last year, and see that I put small plants in May 25th, and harvested many 3-4 pounders, and several 5 pounders, and the pics are there to prove it!

I started my plants at the beginning of March. Some are in the ground. Some are in containers. Given that I have the ground which has no limits as far as the container goes then I should have 3-5 pound plants as well correct? I am using the same sun, very good soil and damn good nutes(Fox Farm and Advanced). My root ball should be big too given I am using the ground. Cali is a primo area for growing, but so is the south.

Most of the south is agricultural land and peaches, grapes, cotton, strawberries, melons and several other things are grown here. If you don't have a pic of the root ball then what's your point?....Oh...we are suppose to "believe" you. Hell I can show pics of my last year grow but that still don't prove I got 5 pounds off each one. As for you filling out a 30 gallon container with root by July........Must have started that INSIDE the year before July came. Again the level of bullshit around here is completly amazing. :wall: Anyone here that has grown anything knows that filling a 30 gallon container out with roots in a few months is blatant lie.

The community can look at the pics MediGrow530 posted earlier and see how bigs his plants are..... https://www.rollitup.org/outdoor-growing/407572-back-again-5.html I guess by July he will have enough roots to bound a 30 gallon container. That is less than 60 days if we go by Wheezers crazy ass reasoning. You don't have to lie to kick it pimp. I caught a great white shark with a Zebco 220. LOL

throwed... i will do my best to mimic your test unfortunately i working with limited funds but i will post many pics of all of my root balls in ground and in 5gal buckets but i guarantee the ones in the buckets will get root bound

even though i disagree with you on your claim that a 5gal container will sustain a plant in a 7-8 month grow cycle instead of discrediting you id rather put it to the test. i respect the fact that you call people out wen you think there lying because nothing is worse than some asshole giving some first time grower the image of his little plant growing up to be massive then finding out it was never possible

i look forward to this harvest it will be interesting... i believe the difference in climate here in cali my cause the roots to grow more... possibly? not for sure just a thought... but i do know that cali is responsible fo like 90% of the nations cannabis supply. maybe it has somthing to do with being by the coast... who knows ... but in my "circle of pot growers" lol an 8 to 10 ft plant is common as well as yielding at least a lb a plant and in my opinion were not very experienced none of my friends bother with ph balance or do they rely give them nutes iv been researching the best ways to grow since i started 5 years ago and told them most of what i know but they still do there own thing and get about the same yield per plant

Thanks for putting him on blast man and helping clean up the level of BS at RIU.

I think this should prove that my pics are legit...Putting these in grow bags tomorrow so they can get some sun. My CFL's are not as good as HPS or MH but they are low power/low heat and are efficient enough to start seeds off before they go outside. 8o)

Dude, no disrespect, but you just joined RIU forums 3 days ago around the time this thread got really heated. You seem a tad fishy. There is no need for PM's. You can post your results right here in this thread. I look forward to seeing your root bound 5 gallon roots in the future. Cali is not responsible for 90 percent of the US drug marijuana supply. Did you know that Bubblegummer was created in Indiana. IIRC, Big Bud was created in Oregon. Let's not forget about the Mexican Brick Weeds too. I'm sure the climate may play a role in result, but I'm sure we can get similar results. FYI, you do know Georgia is on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean...LOL...I'm not sure how you or your friends pull off successful grows without using many nutes or checking pH. I did a experiment last year where I gave one plant water only and she did not do well at all, but whatever works for you.

I checked on my three foot KC Mango that I have in a grow bag that was started in March. She is well over 3 foot now. I forgot to take my cell phone to take a pic, but will upload one tomorrow. Her fans leaves are the size of my hands.

Ha thanks for posting my thread link! lol Wheezer is BY FAR A MUCH MORE EDUCATED AND ADVANCE GROWER THAN YOU WILL EVER BE THROWED! and for your info yes my roots will be crazy big by july! and my plants will be too! bigger than your 5gal grow will be by harvest! HA

Thanks for putting him on blast man and helping clean up the level of BS at RIU.
and no body is on blast because those are my pics. the only one that is Bull shit on RIU is you with your novice statements that 5gal of soil will grow a heavy plant! keep growing in 5 gal because you will never be able to get more than 1lb, let alone a plant that is 20-30ft around!
SN850460.jpgAugust 2010 051311124541.jpgmay 2011... hmm that property looks kinda the similar! you dumb asses! lol

o and by the way those in the last years pic the 2 plants in the white barrels where very root bound when i cleaned em out! those are 15gal

Im with Wheezer, done and will not return to this incompetent thread!

I dont even use nutes until my girls start to flower! and yes our climate here in Cali plays a HUGE Roll in the size of the girls we can produce here! you definitly got one statement right!

The other day while scouting spots for my friend i came across an area where a bunch of trees had domino'd each other and theres so much open sky that the length of the day that it would get light is incredible, so i cant resist moving one plant. But, since theres a bunch of fallen down trees, theres no where to dig a hole.

So im wondering what i should use as a container. Ive deemed a five gallon bucket too small, i want this plant to be a beast with that much sun, and not to get root bound, so im thinking like a rubbermade or a 55 gal drum cut in half

Any ideas? What would yall do?
55G drum cut in half will work. I've had success putting plants in those large rubbermaid storage boxes as well. They work just fine. Either way you'll be in good shape. drill some holes in the bottom of them and you're good to go. I've yeilded a # out of a 40 gallon rubber maid storage box before.

A hit dog will bark. Gets more pathetic by the second. Log off one account and log into another account talking crap. LOL As my grow keeps it moving I will post a series of pics to show I don't have to bullshit anyone. MediGrow530.....See how THROWED is written on the cup proving my pics are legit? Can you do the same? Until then I don't believe anything you post....Though it's not like that garden you posted is impressive anyway. There isn't a plant in the pic you posted that is bigger than any plant I have outside right now. You make me laugh you say you don't use nutes until flowering? LOL...Have you ever heard of BOTANY? It's the study of plant life. No matter what you "think" or do, there is a SCIENCE to this shit. If you use a high NITROGEN fertilizer when you are VEGGING your plants then they will get bigger root and get bigger vegitation. Bigger the plant and more bud sites the bigger the yield. After a plant is done vegging then you use a bloom fert that has a high PHOSPHOROUS rating. Dick ride Wheezer all you want. I think it's funny in fact. You continue to show just how little you know. If your plants are going to be so big then post them when July hits because I am damn sure going to post mine.... which I am sure will be just as big or bigger than yours. I am growing so many I can even dig one up that is in the ground just for the sake of showing everyone that the bullshit you spew is just that....BULLSHIT! It's the middle of May and "your" plants look roughly 2-3 feet....Would love to see what that garden looks like in another 45 days when July hits. HAHAHAHA! In the next 10 days Cali is getting weather that is roughly in the 60-70F area. Here in Atlanta we are getting weather from 70-86F. Check your local weather. RESEARCH instead of talking non sense. It's so easy to expose the idiotic. Notice the 5 gallon bucket next to my plant....It's easy to see my plant is in the same league as yours, but you're such a great grower...LOL...and this pic is 2 weeks old...

thats cool i understand and yes i did just join, so this forum thing is new to me... as far as cali being responsible for 90% of the US cannabis i could be wrong i read that in high times a few months ago and im not sure how old the mag was however i did find this on google

http://cannacentral.com/news/what-us-state-produces-the-most-marijuana-per-person/

cali is definitely responsible for a majority of the supply

p.s. the camera i was useing got dropped in a gravity bong so new pics are on hold till the ol lady gets home with the camera phone
