Is it morally acceptable...

I was wondering

Is it morally acceptable to kill someone in self defense or in defense of a loved one in mortal danger going by the morals of Judaic religions like Christianity and Judaism ("thou shalt not kill")? Also, would you defy those morals even if you were devoted to them (I assume..or hope most will!)?

What if your loved one was an animal, such as a dog, what would you do to someone who killed your beloved companion? Where does this fall on your moral compass?

I'd like to hear religious and non religious people's thoughts

I will defend my family to the death,of them or me.I have no moral problem killing in self defense.
Killing in defense of a animal,no.I did take a bat to the ahole who ran my dog over though. He was swerving at him intentionaly while he was lying in my drive way.OPH
Sorry for the edit.If you go back and research the origanal text, the translation should read murder, not kill.

I would kill someone in defense of myself or my family. I don't think that makes me immoral or a danger to society. Don't attack my family and I won't have to kill you.

As far as animals are concerned it would depend in the situation, if someone injured or killed one of my pets intentionally, I'd have to kick their ass, I wouldn't kill them because of the whole jail thing.

I WOULD kill anyone who was going to/had hurt my family. A guy who became a friend of mine years ago went to jail for 2nd degree murder and got sentenced only 9years and served only 6 because he broke the back of the man (over his knee!) who raped his sister. The judge was openly leniant due to the extenuating circumstances. I would do the same.

I would kill someone who was trying to harm my family or me.I've had a pet killed before, it was by the pound, he got loose and bit someone..he was a cat. Now, everyone knows you don't grab cats that are trying to mate from behind, especially one you don't know..except, apparently, the bitch that my cat bit.She had to have held him or trapped him, because he would have ran away.I had to work that day, and he didn't come home.I thought, I'll go to the pound first thing in the morning,I bet he's been picked up.They killed him before it even opened. When I got there, I described the cat. They took me to a room full of other cats, and in front of these live cats, lies my cat, with his head chopped off. He's been lygin in front of these live cats for 3 hours.Imagine, you caged and looking at a dead human for 3 hours. There excuse was,"well, he didn't have his collar on, and most people don't ever come pick up their cats." I loved him dearly.I went berserk.I scared the shit out of the lady there.I wanted to kill them all. I didn't though.I guess it was partly my fault, as I allowed him to get outside.I still think of how he must have thought, "mom is gonna get me from this place." I did, but I was too late.

My family and dog are under my protection. I would try not to kill.
Maiming may be a better option.
Property like my car I would try to stop you verbally but not deadly force.

I am of no particular religion.
We all have different paths.
Sometimes our paths diverge......

People yes- I think it's every mans job to protect defenseless people, those who cannot protect themselves- whether I know them or not... I would feel guilty otherwise.

Animals, depends... If some kid walked up to my dog with a knife and started stabbing my dog? I would beat the living shit out of them, and I would let the cops take that one. If I was on vacation and my neighbor had poisoned my dog? There's a saying for my opinion on that. "Eye for an eye"

I'm not religious... agnostic if anything... but I have ethical and moral standards that I want cross... and I don't want to spend my life feeling guilty for something I should have done but didn't.

Yes, I used to go off too Stoney.
I was horrible violent, I had the "fight or flight" adrenaline rush.
The adrenaline feels good.
It is actually addictive as hell.

I have spent a lifetime learning to be calm under fire.
Do not get me wrong. I am proficient at deadly force this allows me some leeway when dealing with punks. Property is not worth any life. Screw with my family and they are dead.

The commandment is against murder, not self defense. To defend one's self or family is acceptable, as long as your motive is purely defensive.

I hear ya, Growtech. And we can all say what we'd do, but who knows for sure till we're really faced with the situation?

I try to just keep to myself.I will however, fight anyone if they provoke me, even a man. Now, I'm not saying I'm a badass or as strong as a man, but when I really get mad, I get this rage, and I can't feel pain.I do fight like a man, so I will leave amrk, even if you beat me.Noone has ever beaten me yet, but then again, I've only been in a handful of fights. My dad was really mean.Used to get in fights all the time. You knew you were in trouble if he started laughing.Nobody beat him that I know of, but he could be really cruel when he fought. He once bit a guy's ear off and spit it in the toilet when he got home, lol.

You will never know. As a civilian I have had to use deadly force only once.
An idiot was chasing my wife with a meat ax. I calmly Picked up my riot gun told him to freeze and he did.
When the pigs got there they said"you should have killed the bastard" . It was because of extensive training that I did not kill him. It just kicks in.
BTW deadly force was started by him . When I pointed the weapon at him that is considered deadly force even though I did not have to fire.

Been in a situation before... This kid was getting jumped by a bunch of other guys outside of a restaurant - I guess they were fucking with this kids girlfriend... I got into it with them, 1 ended up needing an ambulance (accidentally got him in the throat with a punch), the other ones ran away... in their cars... drunk.

The cops say I'm lucky there were witnesses, and that I shouldn't have gotten involved... Go figure a cop says something like that right? "Dont protect the people who aren't able to defend themselves" -- Of course, if the police ever showed up to the calls they get, there probably wouldn't have been a situation to begin with... because everyone outside of the restaurant was dialing 911... but nobody was doing anything.

I probably could've gotten hurt during the whole thing, but if I just kept my nose out of it- I would've felt like a bigger pussy than all of the people sitting there with their cell phone cameras out... and I know if I was getting jumped by a bunch of dudes... I would hope someone would be man enough to jump in and help me out if I was needing it.

The people who sit around doing nothing are probably next to become victims of violent crimes.

I don't have questions about what I'd do... There is an answer to 1 guy getting beaten by 5 people... and even if I jump in to help him, and end up getting my ass beat too - at least I'm not alone, and at least I dont go home wishing I were man enough to help.

Seriously though... now that I'm thinking about it... Were the cops wrong for saying I should stay out of it, or were the witnesses wrong for being a group of 15 different people that just sat around watching this kid get hurt by a bunch of dudes?

Either way, I'm willing to bet that if alcohol were not involved (Which it was)... these 5 kids probably wouldn't have gotten into a drunken group mentality that is accepting of violence against a perfect stranger.

LOL sorry for the rant... I'm still annoyed with the way some of the shit went down that night.

Stoney, I'm sorry to hear about your cat, that is really shitty of them. Where I live they only hold cats for 3 days. I keep mine under lock and key, stupid teenagers like to run cats over around here.

Poor kitty, :(

Do you think they actually LIKE to run cats over? Because as I recall, cats LIKE to run out in front of cars, sometimes even causing accidents...

Happened to me just a week or two ago...

I don't think you understand Growtech, if a cat runs out in the street, they FLOOR it and try to hit it. That's different than accidently hitting it. Plus with a 25 MPH speed limit, it's pretty easy to stop.

I hear you. You're a stand up guy for doing what you did.I'd have helped the guy too..I guess what I meant by my earlier comment is, I hope I wouldn't do something stupid like slip and fall or some dumb shit and not even be able to do anything, lol.

Thanks, miss, I still feel guilty about it.I should have called in and got him, but I thought they'd hold him..I never knew he bit anyone. But, still, I think he was justified in biting her..she grabbed him from behind because he was screwing her cat, who was also outside.I mean, duhhhhh.

I hate it when that happens, too,my brother's stepson watched his little dog get hit by a car when he was only about 8 years old.To top it off, my bro had to put the dog down. The boy was sent inside for that, though.
