Drove from Florida to Alaska back in 1994...most awesome road trip.
Saw a sign on the side of the road that said "Lunch --->" somewhere a day into the great wilderness so I looked at the ole lady and she shrugged, took the right.

Followed a dirt road for a couple of miles and it ended at a farm house in the middle of nowhere.

Old guy comes out and starts speaking in french to me, I smiled and politely said "I am sorry, I only speak English."
He said "Wait."

A minute later a teenage guy walks out with a big smile and said "You are either lost or hungry or both."
I said " Yeah, there was a sign back on the highway!"

They served us a fantastic farm fresh lunch and provided a great conversation for an hour before we hit the road again.
Apparently we were in fact on the wrong highway, they gave us directions and sent us on our way.

I have made the trip on the ALCAN highway a few times now and every time I have a memorable experience.

We are all the same...they just talk funny!!!

LOL!


BTW, I speak multiple languages now...the world is a wonderful place when you learn to communicate and appreciate the diversity.

i agree, the world is pretty great. i just wish our government (usa) hadn't fugged it up for us. we're pretty much hated everywhere, lol...

Nah, that is not so true.

I have been to like 20 countries last count...most of them love us because they love what we stand for.
Granted, a lot of Americans act like fuggin douchebags when they travel...like they are special or something...I always try to be as humble and helpful as possible everywhere I go.

People love freedom (most people) and not so many have it...they romanticize America, just like we do with other countries.

i agree, while i haven't traveled nearly as much as you, the 8 or so countries i have been in, i can't ever really recall any bad feelings towards me simply because i was an american..
the only time it came kind of close was my gf and i were on a train going from milan to venice, and the lady pushing the food cart stopped at the seats in front of us, served them, then walked right passed the gf and i and never even looked at us, then stopped at the seats directly behind us and served them.. i was wearing a nyc soul shirt at the time, but idk if that was it, or she just had a bug up her ass.. that's the only time i ever felt even some what dissed for being an american internationally...

Huh, she was prolly dumped by an American GI when she was a younger gal.

Italy....oh Italy!

The fam and I drove to Italy through the Austrian Alps a few years ago; went to Venice and beyond. We ended up in a small town on the west coast about midway down (would have to look at a map for the exact location...hold on....Livorno, down by Pisa) and we stayed at a mediocre hotel.

The wife is a gabber and is multiligual as well. She chats up a lady that works at the hotel, blah blah blah....the lady makes a phone call to her son who works at a local restaraunt to see if they can fit us in at a table...it is Sunday.

The son says to give us directions and she wrote something on a piece of paper and said "give to man at restaraunt."

We show up at the restaraunt which is ON the water, the Ligurian Sea and there is not a soul there, place is CLOSED.
So of course I am like, "WTF, did you misunderstand?"
We were pretty much like "fuck it." so we walked the beach for a bit and on the way back to the car the lights were on out on the beach patio so we walked up to the door and knocked.

A guy about my age, at that time late 30's answers the door and says "HI!"
I handed him the note, he waved us in.

After about an hour of translation over the phone with the son of the woman that sent us we had an 8 course meal, pasta, fish, beef, pork, chicken, etc and BOTTLES wine.

The owner had his whole family show up...like 15 people!!!

We dined like it was the last night on Earth.

Cost me like $300 but it was memorable like a mofo.

God, I miss traveling.
I love this world.

Got a ton more stories....Hahahaha!!!
Amsterdam is a fave!!!

i really loved amsterdam as well.. spain and barcelona are my fave country and city thus far though by far.. germany is pretty cool and people are very nice there as well ime..

I regret never making it to Spain, but Germany is the bomb.

I am planning a trip to Germany this fall and will, of course, drive to Holland.
Spain is on my list but Ireland is before that...wife wanted to take me for my 40th and I said no...leaving teenagers at home alone for a week was not an option and taking them did not fit into my picture of an Ireland trip.

We have drug them across the planet multiple times and now that they are older we have great conversations about the world...political, religious, cultural, etc...glad we did it and they are glad too.
But my picture of Ireland was painted with me sitting on some Atlantic cliffs in peace (no kids) with a case of Irish beer and some horses.
NOT a tourist experience of Dublin.

lol, i flew out of barcelona and had like a 12 hour layover in dublin, so i was screw this, i'm going to go get a hotel room instead of staying at the airport, so my entire dublin experience was those 12 hours, from about 12 or so at night till the next am, basically in my hotel room and the drive to and from, but i wasn't really blown away from what little i saw of dublin.. i'm sure i only saw a very small part of the city, but it seemed kind of industrial to me.. not really much to judge it from, but what can i say? lol..

Look @ the players on the American teams ;) More than 50% of the players, today, are Canadian. Back in 1993 and the 90's, it was more like 65% of all players were Canadian.

The maple syrup comes from Quebec, which is not really Canada but kind of, for now.
Highways for snowmobiles wouldn't work well in the summer so typically cars/trucks/motorcycles are utilized

We have some good beer. Molson Canadian is not one of them. However, everyone should try Granville Island beer! Our $ looks pretty, but alas it is worth $0.91 to the US dollar.

EDIT: AND our gas is ridiculously expensive. $1.47/L for regular, that's $5.59/Gallon....for regular.

yeah it is! i spent 2 years there, the people are very friendly. the people take pride in their homes/neighborhoods. same in switzerland. the shop-keepers are up early, scrubbing their sidewalk area with mops/bucket. seems like most places in europe are overall cleaner than the u.s. except paris of course, dog shit everywhere...
