Is 1000w too much light for my room?

OK here is my question. I am borrowing a set of 1000w mh and hps setups from a friend. He needs em back and I need to purchase a new HPS light and Ballast. I am thinking Lumatek Digital have heard good things about this setup.

BUT my question is between 750w or 1000w. Is the extra power for the light a waste, serious question.

Here is a rundown of the grow room.

I started with an unfinished tool / utilty room in the basement. I built a wall and installed a locking door so I now have a room in a room.

I have sectioned the room off into three parts. Veg, Flower, and general utility.
The veg part is 3'x4' x8' tall with an adjustable shelf. Above the shelf I have a double 2' flouro and humidity dome for seedlings and clones. And hanging under is a 400w MH

The flower section is 4'x6'x8' with a 1000w HPS. I have a 250cfm fan pulling through a carbon filter. Temps hover at 88 to 92. The walls are covered in mylar.

The utility seciton is a couple feet wide and has a full shelf to keep tools, and nutes organized.

you can never have TOO MUCH light...

first off, your temps are too high at best...i'd up your fan to something with around 409cfm...that would lower your temps considerably...also, i cant tell for sure but do you have anything cooling your reflector? that could be a major cause for your high temperature

1000W is gonna be no problem in that size room (and definitely wont be TOO MUCH LIGHT), but you need to get your exhaust down first...(and are you exhausting all over your plants in pic 3?!?!?!?)

try going filter > reflector > fan > out
i go filter > fan > reflector > outdoors and i only have to keep my fan on 1/4 power to vent around a 5'x5'x7' room and keep the temps and humidity at 75F

depending on where your exhausting, that should keep your temps at around 75F lights on...

i know this was all over the place and i answered a couple questions you didnt ask, but all in all i hope i helped...check out my grow journal link in sig if you want to see some pics of my filter/fan/reflector/exhaust path

peace and grow well

was just looking at the pics more closely...get rid of that string holding your lights up ASAP...those things will snap/rip/break/catch on fire...

go either with some metal wire...or go buy some "Yo-Yo"s from your local hydro store

$0.02

Good stuff forgot to mention that with the new ballast I am going to get a cool tube setup for the heat issue. Can't go with a larger fan bc of the noise.

The hood thats there is the one on loner from a friend and its time for it to go home.

In pick 3 the ducting you see on the bottom is the fresh intake. The exhaust is run out to another room.

The strings have been replaced with link chain since the picture.

And I have just read conflicting opinions about upgrading to 1000w. Something about the extra wattage (750 to 1000) doesn't increase the yield that much.

Good call on the cooltube, I love mine, no heat probs. at all. You'll love it.

Do you have to run ducting into that room? I always preferred to have a hole going into the room and a fan blowing into it. Guess it doesn't matter, I just always found it easier and cheaper this way. I did the same exhausting air but will be putting in an inline fan attached to a carbon filter for some very wonderful smell issues I have been having.

I also use link chain, no worries here with holding up the weight. Very easy to use, good call.

IF you have the money to go with a 1000W light, I would do it. You're trying to give the plants the best possible environment that you can to maximize their growing potential. If you are like me and go with a 750W light, during the grow you'll just wonder if the plants would have been bigger if you did go with a 1000W.
Good luck on your build and grow.

As mentioned, your temp are too high. A larger exhaust fan is recommended. You can connect the fan to dimmer switch to modulate it and find the perfect volume. Two large fans running on low is a LOT quieter than one tiny fan running wild.

Mylar on the walls is actually not very good. There are a lot of stories on this, but basically Mylar only lights up the areas that are in direct reflection of the light.

Example: Cut a piece of Mylar 8½x11. Put that piece of Mylar and a sheet of plain white copy paper next to each other directly under a lamp. Turn off all the other light in the room and move the pieces around. Look at the rest of the unlit room and whichever material lights up the room the best, is the one you should use. Mylar will cast a reflection straight up. The white paper will act like another lamp and the whole room is brighter. Therefore, your walls should be covered in white plastic (see panda film) or painted Flat White.

no such thing as 2 much light, usually the question is do you have enough and id say with a 4 by 6 1000 watts should be great! my room once finished will be 6 by 9 with 1800 watts (three 600 watts)

cool...loving my daystar AC...i'd still suggest sucking some air thru it to help cool...especially if you go with the 1000W

ok cool...id try to move either the ducting or plants still though...dont want that constant pulling of your plant toward the vent

well...you can POTENTIALLY get an extra 250g if you had a super perfect grow and maxed out at the 1g/1W scale...i average .5-.75g/W...but like zerotilt said...you never want to scratch your head after a grow and wonder if it couldve been better

Thats it! Decision made, 1000w is going to be it. I have been vegging these under the borrowed 1000w MH and I am extremely pleased with the grow so far.

If I did flower with the 750 I am sure I would be second guessing the decision for ever.

Thanks for the input and check out my journal in a couple of weeks I'll be rigging up the cool tube and 1kw lumatek hps for what I am hoping is a killer flower cycle!

There is such thing as too much light but you won't know it until a few weeks before harvest.

750w lamps are too rare. Get a 1K because they are so common and cheap. If your plants start to foxtail, raise the light.

You should get a bigger fan, but use a speed controller to bring it down a notch... more performance but with no added noise. You can get them for $15 from Harbor Freight.

So 25 days into flowering with the 1000w Enhanced spectrum HPS.

I couldnt be happier with it. The best part is how much cooler the HPS runs the thousand watt metal halide I had in there was alot hotter.

Just wanted to say thanks for the input.

I'm interested in how a 1000w would perform in a grow tent that size as opposed to say, a 600w.
How is everything going now? Have you had issues with heat?

No real issues with the heat. The fan I have is venting both rooms and keeping the flower room 75*F

I just smoked the first bit of this harvest tonight and I couldn't be happier.

I still have 5 under the light for another week and found a seed in the cola of one of my plants. IDK if it just went hermie here at the end or what?

Anyway I would deff get as much light as you can afford, you don't want to be at the end and with a 600w and wonder "what if?"

Peace and Ganja:leaf:
