I'm switching to Soil from Hydro. This is my second growth in Hydro. My first grow I lost a whole crop due to heating issues. I'm currently on my second growth and everything is going great (learned from my first grow) but Hydro is a pain. Even though this second growth looks good thus far i'm still switching. I just bought me 8-3qt pots that i'm about to start Some Bubbleberry and Rocklock clones in. I'm going to Veg under 6 4ft T5's. Any advice for a Soil newbie coming from Hydro? I also want to know what Soil should I use? I hear Fox Farm Ocean Forest is good. All advice is appreciated. Lets hear your experience if you switched. Maybe this can become a good Sticky

Fox Farm Ocean Forest for soil and organic guanos/kelp/earthworm castings/molasses teas for fertilizing. Keep it organic in soil, my best advice...:joint:

two words Happy Frogs

FFOF sucks!

organic = loss of control

start in HF switch to soiless mix and chem nutes = total control

read my balls to the wall sig link

Soil grows may attract more pests.
Also make sure not to over water.
To check if your plant needs water, stick half of your finger in the soil and if it's still damp , you can wait another day or two before watering

cool good advice I wish somebody wouldve commented sooner I bought some Pro-Mix. Then i wateredthem with some nutes. All Advanced Sensi grow, B-52, Nirvana, oh and some great white for the roots.

I made the jump from hydro to dirt too. Unless you really know what you are doing (and I didn't at first) there are too many pumps, hoses and other things to go wrong.

I use MiracleGro Potting Mix right out of the bag. When transplanting seedlings into dirt I mix up a batch of my vegging nutes and make sure the seedlings go into damp soil. That way I won't have to try to water fragile seedlings for the first couple of days. During 4-6 weeks of vegging I water each plant 10-12 ounces of nute water a day. Every 2 weeks I do a semi-flush -- I just pour a gallon of pure water into the pot and wait for it to quit draining. Don't water for 2 days following a semi-flush.

I have a seperate nute for blooming and put it into the daily watering during this stage too.

That ought to get you going.

Good luck, BigSteve.

yup,

go get yourself, some bat guano, epsom salt, work castings, sea kelp(flowering stage), vitamin B-1(root stimulator), superthrive, seabird guano. Mix all that shit up in a bottle and let it sit there forever. Then when you need it use 1 tablespoon per feeding. Soil means water occasionally and have a damn life. Hydro means water often and no life.

WTF? Since when do you water plants that are already in water? That's bad information. Also, hydro creates faster growth and heavier yields, I'll never switch back to soil. True, it can be a pain in the ass to work out the kinks at first, but once you do it's smooth sailing. OP you should have considered hempy buckets....

Juicebox, Correct me if I am wrong, but do you not have to top off the tub with water on a daily basis, check the damn PH, add nutes and change out your water at least every two weeks?

Nope... I add water once every 4-5 days and I adjust my ph and nutes at the same time. It takes 2 minutes. I've never done a res change because I keep my water pretty cold and my sytem is %100 light proof. I did a %50 water change when I switched to 12/12 though so I could concentrate the nutes for bloom more. Like I said once you work out the kinks.....smooth sailing. OP if water temps are an issue for you check out my journal in my sig, I setup a pretty sweet water chiller that cost me nothing.
