Is it Sterling or silver plate?
Sterling is about 62% silver I believe so that should be enough to kill those guys tho might just wound them long enough to make your getaway.
Need fairly high temps to melt silver or sterling which has a higher mp due to the alloy metals in it I believe. I looked up the mp of silver a while back as I wanted to make some silver rods from a couple of .9999 silver coins for colloidal silver. Need a MapGas torch so never got around to it. Just split a coin in half and hung each piece on silver wire I bought online. Works fine.

when I inherited some, I took it to the Pawn Shop and was surprised at the amount of money they gave me.
Close to $1000. Copper has gotten very expensive now. Today i was chatting with the senior maintenance man at work and he told me to be on the lookout for pennies made 1961or earlier. He found one and got $99 dollars for it. $1 went to the pawn guy. good luck!

Throw VHS porn tapes at Jehovahs Witnesses, it saves bullets and is more "effective" 
electric furnace (like a kerr electromelt but a knockoff is cheaper) is the ticket....you can use a torch, but your torch size will limit the amount you can effectively melt at 1 time, and you really need an oxy-fuel torch if you don't want to spend a lot of time waiting for the metal to melt and flow easily.
