ok... so im not quite sure i am really having a problem. in fact it may be helping me out. the outer shell of the seed never fell off in the soil. it opened up when it sprouted but i guess didnt crack off the embrio enough and got stuck. so basically i have a 1-1/2" stem with an outer seed-shell. it appears to be making the stem really sturdy & strong so i havent played with it at all. does anyone know if this is not good for the plant? will it eventually fall off the sprout when the leaves grow out more? will i harm the plant if i try to remove it myself? any help would be greatly appreciated!

I broke the top pod off one of mine trying to take it off. It grew into a 3 inch tall stem and died never growing a single leave.

ok... so a few different answers... i'll just leave it alone, hopefully it falls off if not i think i'll go with the "be very careful & remove it with tweezers" method. thanks again everyone!
