HPS vs LED

Lots of mixed information online. I am genuinely curious the difference and how they affect quality and yield. Most people now adays say LED blows HPS out of the water. However if you talk to the old heads that have been growing for decades that wholeheartedly believe HPS is better. Any insight?

IDK, a double ended HPS can probably match the spectrum of a good LED. Although it uses a little more electricity.

I have a side by side comparison going right now, and so far they are about equal....Running a 675 watt at the wall LED against a bare bulb 600 HPS.

The HPS is only good for 1-2 grows though. Heat is comparable between the 2 lights.

And how much is a new bulb after those 2 grows?

It's quite a bit more electricity (for a given ppfd):

Best DE HID lights are ~ 1.85 mmoles/j
Best LEDs are currently ~ 2.8 mmole/j, ~ 50% more light per watt

Agreed....I do hope my new LED outperforms the HPS, but so far not seeing it....I'm only in the 2nd week of flower though!

I have 2 more LED's being delivered this afternoon, so I'm not against them....Just not convinced, yet, they are all that much better.

I've ran hps systems for years, last year I started to switch over to led lights and still ran 600w hps system, since then the hps has fully been shut off and wont be turning back on..

The comparison between the 2 when it comes to structure, speed of growth and less electricity is hard to beat..

i'd be curious how a side by side by side with a 630w CMH would fare against those 2. the cmh spectrum *might* be the best of the 3

HPS is a develeped technology, we have come as far as it can take us, we have had a lot longer to perfect thier use.
LED is a better tech but is rapidly developing, so your next light will not be like this one.
Im getting about 1g per watt with my led set ups which is about the same as i remeber getting years ago with hps but i feel as that was optimal with hps and i got lots of room for improvement with the led

@manfredo led will always out compete hps in a sealed room with co2, the watts from the wall may be similar but if your not having the pay for the electricity from your mini split a/c running full tilt your saving tons of money on cooling costs. the yield is also better with leds. i went from 4 600 watt hps to two 650 watt hlg scorpion diablos i pulled 5 pounds last summer with the two 650's when before i was pulling a pound per 600 watt hps fixture. hydro bill went from $1000 down to around $350.

It's a 600 watt HPS Hortilux open bulb in a reflector, vs a 670 watt LED....This one...

As stated, so far not much of a growth difference, but I really hope that changes.

that's what i meant: add the CMH to make a side by side by side test and see how it performs. i loved my cmh but now i'm on board the led train.

$80, so yes the LED is cheaper in the long run, but the technology is changing so fast LED's are obsolete in 5 years.
After 5 years of LED growing you can throw the whole thing in the bin, buy new and go out with the leftover savings.
Or just continue to use them. If they are food now they will still be good in 5 years. Maybe not cuttinf edge but neither is HPS.

Yep, I am sure LED are the wave of the future... I'm just saying HPS might still have their place. Like if you have an electric heater in your tent to bring the temp up, are you saving any electric? In some cases, no.

But yes, most people are having increased yields with LED's....I hope I am one of them. LED tech seems to be improving and prices coming down.

I also just switched to coco, and I see an immediate huge difference over soil.

I'm just trying to talk up HPS as I have a shit ton of used equipment...Lots of hoods, ballasts, and a pile of bulbs... :p I bet places have roomfuls of this shit!!

My SF4000, PL4500 and VS4300 all did very well next to a 600w hps, all 3 lights replaced my older 600w hps lights now, the power savings alone was worth the switch

I got a dozen hoods an 1000watt ballast kicking around cant give them away here we a bit over 30 cents per kwh killed the hps/MH market.
