HPS or T5, in a 5 foot high grow room.

Hello,

I was considering getting T5 lights for my grow room, its a very small grow room(more like an open closet) and then did a search on HPS vs T5 and people seem to favor the HPS lights. But then I started thinking. Would my plants get to tall and get too close to the HPS in that small space? The HPS I was looking at were 600 watt, the T5 I was looking at was 100 watt 8000 lumens.

and buy a reflector

definitely go with the HPS. But make sure the ballast is switchable to MH as you actually want MH in veg. I just got my kit that only came with an HPS but with the money I'm saving by not buying weed I'm investing in a MH too.

You'll have no problem with it in a 5 foot high spot. I got a 1000 watt going into a 6 foot enclosure

The HPS says it has 30% more blue light for vegging, do you think that is supplemental enough for the plants to veg nicely? Also would a 150 HPS watt suffice for a 2x2 foot area?

yea an HPS would work, but by having 2 lights you'd save money buying bulbs because you have two separate bulbs. I don't have facts to back this up (lol daily show) but I think that an MH would produce a LOT more of the required veging light. Only thing that will happen though is that the plant's nodes won't be as tight as it could be.

I think so…*yes. Check my journal (in sig)… 400w HPS veg/flower …*you don't NEED MH; but MH has the preferred output for the vegetative state.

Thanks for the replies guys! It seems I will only have enough money for either 1 MH bulb or 1 HPS bulb for growing these plants full term for now. Which one should I go for?

Ok great. Thank man I've been reading that, its a great journal! I hope my plants can come out like yours have been :D.

if you only have money for one definitely go for the HPS! HPS is for flowering which is the most important part of the grow!

A 600 watt is way too large for your area,a 400 watt is perfect for the space but have you given any thought to heat build up issues ?

Any high intensity light source is going to heat up that small area to 100 degrees in minutes without air cooling the light, have you investigated how to properly cool a hps or mh light ?

Oh and btw, running mh for veg isnt needed & offers no savings, metal halide is only a bit better for veg & not worth a shit for bud,i dont even bother changing bulbs back n forth any more & the mh bulbs just collect dust, also be aware that watt for watt mh produces quite a bit less light output vs hps.

Even the ballasts in t 5 systems are going to elevate temps in such a small area,if you havent allready planned out how to accomplish removing hot air from the grow space you need to before buying any light.

I am running a 600 hps with 2 plants in a closet with the door open. It is cold in here so the temps are about right for the grow anyway. I have a samll fan in the room to expel stagnant heated air. I usually go SOG, but I aint grew in a year and I am trying growing less plants, but bigger plants. Hope you can manage your grow. Everything has a learning curve, good luck.
