HPS give off more heat than equal watt MH right?

I've never owned or operated a meta halide before, and i just wanted to make sure that they're not quite as hot as the hps... i really dont feel like investing in a coolable hood for the MH as I'ce already getting one for the HPS.. do you think I could get away with an uncooled 1000 watt MH setup? Or should i just get the damn thing? any used gear about? get at me. peees

I noticed the HPS lights are maybe 20% cooler than the MH... but the MH was a conversion bulb so not sure if it holds true with "normal" MH ( both 400W's)

i have always thought, and i believe i have heard, that hps is hotter than MH- I will find out on thursday when I pull my MH bulb out and go to the equal 400 watt hps bulb after 36 dark break after veg... I will post the changes in my temp on my journal and if i remember here as well.

I actually run both a 400W MH and a 400W HPS at the same time (side by side) and can confirm that the HPS runs noticably hotter.

That said, a 1000W MH should still run plenty hot. You'll probably need some kind of cooling if it's not in a well ventilated area.

you want to get an aircooled hood for both lights...unless you are veging and flowering in the same room...then you could just switch ballasts and bulbs on one aircooled set up...and yes 1000w mh gets really hot ....wheather or not hps or mh is hotter is a moot point at 1000w....you want to cool them both..

Just a gut feeling, but since the HS if more red, i'd think they toss off more heat.

but then if you think of flames, i believe blue is hotter than red/orange

But we aren't talking about a plasma discharge light.

UV light has less heat then IR light.

just hooked my hps up- no real difference in heat from the same wattage MH (400watts) Thats what I noticed in my 4x4x8 room

get aircooled if your runnin 1000w .im with nickfury. i run a 1000w swtchable aircooled. in my opinion the aircooled reflecter is a must bro. otherwise stuff gets too hot and dangerous..
