hps for veg

hi all,

I purchased a cheap MH 400WATT and an expensive Hortilux Enhanced Spectrum HPS bulb. During veg, the cheaper MH bulb started emitting an awful ringing sound I couldnt get to go away so I returned it. I have no more funds.. is it OK to veg under the HPS? If I do, what are the consequences as opposed to using a MH bulb?

I have already put my babies under the HPS bulb and I have already had to increase ventilation air speed and lift the light 6 inches to maintain 87^F on and 75^F off. Seems to be A LOT HOTTER even though it is the same wattage.

Thanks guys,

Thanks for all the info guys. The HPS is definitely hotter than the MH. It seems WAY brighter as well. I know about color spectrums.. but has anyone done a comparison of same genetics vs MH and HPS light for vegging? Just curious as to what the consequences are.

Marijuana plants are not different than other types of plants in what light spectrums they most need during different stages of growth and yes botanists and horticulturists and many others have tested and proven it many times over the years that when using HID lighting metal halide bulbs produce a light spectrum that is best for plants while in the vegetative growth stage and high pressure sodium produces a light spectrum that is best for plants while in the flowering growth stage.

It has nothing at all to do with individual strain genetics and has everything to do with basic plant-life genetics.

MH causes tighter nodal spacing than HPS. That has been proven over and over again.
Yes, they do have an incredible amount of nodes already for only being 6''. In my friends garden his plants get kinda long with maybe 2'' in between nodes. He uses HPS. Interesting.. Thank you Mr. Ganja =]

yeaaa.. everyone pretty much answered that for ya.. lol.. but like they all said.. the only real difference is that using HPS during veg my cause your plants to stretch a little bit.. but alot of people.. as they all have stated.. use HPS throughout their whole grow.. and their plants turn out fine.. if you want.. you could go out and buy a couple DAYLIGHT spectrum CFL's.. theyre 6500K ... and you can place a couple of those down towards the bottom of your plants.. and that would help give it some of the blue spectrum it needs durning veg.. you should be fine even without the CFL's tho.. Good Luck!!

shite... i just realized that you said you have an "ENHANCED SPECTRUM HPS"... lol.. soo oneva mind.. you wont even need the CFL's.. cuz im pretty sure the enhanced spectrum HPS have extra blue spectrum in it.. soo your actually good throughout your whole grow.. you dont even need the MH... lol..
