How old does a plant have to be before you can take a clone off it?

Blue mystic feminized.
I got this one plant that is much too young to be cloned at the moment (about 2 weeks old) one of my lights fell and burned the crap out of it and now it's missing 1/4 of its leaves. But it was growing the strongest before that and here's the thing... IT STILL IS! I definitely want this to be my mother plant. It's still the tallest and recuperated to be the largest and leafiest of the 7.
What doesn't kill you only makes you... stranger. :D

How old does a plant typically have to be before you clone it? I want to clone and top it killing two birds with one stone if that's possible. :]
LMK, thanks!

the plant needs to be big enough to snag a node and have a long enough stem to grow roots.

i would say a month old

you can put chemical root hormone on the part of the stalk that will go in the soil to speed up the process, but you dont require it

Is this the regular strain or is it auto?
I usually clone as soon as they pop they're hairs. I like taking mine once they're in flower. Its a little slower at first but then it explodes with growth in flower.
If yours are the auto variety I wouldn't bother. I've grown many BMAF and tried cloning and it makes one helluva tiny, almost worthless plant.

What I do is wait til grows its 5th set of leaves then it's usually strong and mature enough to be topped, and yes you can clone the top.

clone during veg, so the plant doesnt have to switch from flower to veg then back to flower

Thank you all :)) and no it's not an auto, I made sure of that. I do have a few autos of the same strain but those are just for pressing the easy button. lol

I go 4-5 weeks in veg then cut clones. I think the more mature a plant is the better chance of getting clones to root.

You have a number of options, none of them bad.

You can make the top of your best plant a clone. But if you want her to be a regular mother plant you don't want to kill her for
one clone. Or you can wait a couple weeks when the plant should be able to safely give up 4 or 5 decent size clones. This is the best of both worlds
as you get the clones, plus you make the mother much more bushy. Every cutting you take will re-grow 2 or more buds at that site. The more you cut
the more you get.

Or you can just let all of them grow out and pick the best yielder to be your mom. Then you re-grow her by putting her back into veg mode after harvest.

Good luck, BigSteve.
