since 1900 the worlds population has doubled twice. with the doubling time at around 40 to 60 years and a population of over 6 billion people now how long can this go on?

humans are the only species on earth that have exponential population growth.

what does everybody think about this?

who thinks half of us are going to get wiped out by a pandemic

There are natural checks in place for all animals on the planet, humans are no exception. While most animals have predators, we have disease. Unfortunately, humans have found a way around theirs population checks.

It's not that the growth rate has really increased, actually, while the growth rate for the human race keeps increasing, the growth rate for an average family unit has actually been decreasing for decades. It's just the fact that because less people are dieing there are more familys. At this point in our evolution the worst thing we could possibly do as a species is cure cancer. If cancer, or some other big disease, is wiped out then the death rate will bottom out. More people will be living longer than ever and food and energy supplies will start to dissapear. Once that starts to happen, the earth will not be a happy place as countries start fighting over resources.

yes family size has been decreasing in first world counrtrys(not quite so much in poorer countrys) but now that there is already so many people in the world it almost doesn't even matter since theoretically there should be 4 times as many familys as there were 100 years ago. but i think were already starting to see countries fight over resources

also there is a cure for cancer

Sex results in babies, Humans are the only creatures I know of who have sex for enjoyment rather than to reproduce.
sex is everywhere. You can not look anywhere and not see it, tv, computer, video games, magazines, school, work?, Out in the real world, etc.

Its not a bad thing to me, we are embracing our primitive instincts and not shunning it like some religions encourage we do, but to me it seems like a logical explanation of our exponential growth patterns.

As time goes on it will only become more and more culturally acceptable.

It seems I have turned myself on..you see!? Its even on the intarwebs ;)

bonobos appear to have sex for fun. dolphins are also likely engaging in sex for pleasure.

It doesn't help that we have religions that advocate abstinence over condoms. I mean look at africa there are plenty of people there that won't use contraceptives because its not holy and the Vatican declares it so.
