How I Quit Smoking Cigarettes

I've been trying to quit for the past 2-3 years and have hardly made it over the 24 hour mark up until recently. I have a problem with addiction...my dad was an addict, and even though I never met the dude I unfortunately inherited his addictive personality. Everything that can be considered an indulgence I easily get addicted to...drugs, sex, music, money and food...anything I enjoy I just can't limit myself on at all. It took a long time to realize this was an issue, but now I'm fully aware of it and it's really helping me to take the steps necessary to improve my life and lifestyle.

I smoked for the first time when I was 7-8 yrs old. It wasn't a cigarette and the person who allowed me to smoke had their own issues, so I don't fault them anymore. I used to like to blame him for a lot of my problems (ex boyfriend of my mom) but there comes a point when you realize every choice is yours to make, and even if I was too young to decide back then, I sure as hell know what I'm doing now...

I didn't start smoking cigarettes daily until around 13-14 and at around 20 I was up to a 1.5 packs a day. I'm now 23 and had gradually worked back down to about 1 pack a day but that's still shit and I was getting to the point of depression because it's a hard concept to wrap your head around - how can a chemical dependency make your choices for you? How can you know something is awful but continue to do it? Even when you don't want to, you can literally convince yourself " It's okay :) "...well it's definitely not okay and I decided it was time to quit paying tobacco companies to kill me.

So enough of the backstory - this is how I did it:

My fiance is not the biggest fan of me smoking weed, or growing it. Me and her had come to an agreement that if I could do it without impacting our lives and if I made a couple accommodations to keep her happy then I could grow - everythings working out good, and I'm loving this new hobby...so I got this idea - I made a new deal with my girl that I won't smoke weed again until I haven't had a cigarette for a full 30 days. The 2nd part of the deal is what helped the most - If I smoked weed before I hadn't had a cigarette for 30 days then she could kill my plants and sell all of my growing equipment / gear...

It worked lmao. I guess I really love marijuana. This is like a tripple win - tolerance break, get to quit smoking cigs and saving a shit load of money from not buying cigarettes or weed. This situation is probably pretty specific / unique so IDK if it can help any of you, but hopefully it could inspire you to do something similar to overcome this nasty addiction called nicotine. For the first time in 8 years I haven't had a cigarette in over 3 days and I feel amazing because of it. Not like I recovered, but because I fucking did it! 3 days isn't a full victory but it sure as hell feels like it. Today was the first time I had ever woke up and not thought "cigarette and coffee" right away...it's too early to say I made it, but I'm almost 100% positive I won't light another cig anytime soon. Don't feel like restarting that 30 day timer lol.

So what are some methods you guys' have used to quit? What would you recommend for the coming weeks? Anything I should expect?

3 days is 3 days :) good job!

I am just like you when it comes to addiction. If I like it, I abuse it. Especially meat and shellfish. I've only been smoking for about 4 years. Only in the last 2 have i been a "real" smoker, 10-20 a day, but i roll mine, and don't use filters, just roach (my body detests smoke, even the tiny amount of resistance a filter adds to a drag, will make me wretch or puke). Fortunately if i want to quit things, i can quite easily, but unfortunately, i have an ability to find any excuse to jump off the wagon. I've drunk almost every single night for the past 8 years, however last year, just because why not, i stopped dead and went t-total for the whole of december, wasn't really an issue, but i started again because i enjoy it. Same goes for cigarettes, i can stop for a month if i want, but alas i'm yet at the point of telling myself i genuinely want off them. Utterly irrational.

Thanks Tip Top - means a lot. Me and you have had our share of ...disagreements...on this forum, so I think it says a lot about your character that you'd come post something positive in here...(or u just don't remember me haha)

If your body rejects smoke like that, have you considered vaping?

Haha, the name rings bells, but to be quite honest, i recall little of anything since i started drinking. Ask me what i did on saturday and i can't tell you.

And I have 3 vapes including a volcano. Used the volcano about 10 times in 3 years. Just don't enjoy the high compared to a joint. Same with my roor and the pipe i bought of fdd. Just not as good as a joint, doesn't get me nearly as high and is a less enjoyable experience. I can't smoke more than hal;f a cigarette, and have to chip out joints half way through. Until i hit the limit, i'm fine and enjoyable, but adter that it gets ugly fast.

Hey ary0n and congrats. Let me tell you that the battle has just begun. Going to be a challenging few weeks to say the least. Day 3 for a lot of people is rough so if you are doing well then great news. I have quit for up to a year and started smoking again. I am now on 8 months cigarette free. The thing that gets a lot of people is alcohol or one of the many things you associated with smoking. Alcohol being the worst because it impairs your judgement of course. I don't advise anybody to quit for any reason other than for themselves. You seem to have the right attitude about not paying tobacco companies to kill yourself but if it was truly your girlfriend that pushed you into it then most likely you will be smoking again at some point. Perhaps when she pisses you off as they do or if you break up or just because you think she won't find out etc. You have to have the mindset that this is for you. You don't want to be controlled by a cigarette, you want a healthier life. It needs to be for you. You will have your rough days trust me. For most people cravings will come and go for as long as you live but will get less frequent as time passes. I wish you all the luck and it does get easier.

Hey man thanks for stoppin by - I appreciate the insight.it was actually my idea, I'm just having her help me go along with it because I know she would love to kill my plants so the 'risk' is real even if I put myself into the situation. I figure that was the only way to ensure it'd work - cuz she sure as hell won't let me off the hook now! Lol

It's that first one that gets ya...seems like if u can hold off on that morning cigarette then the rest of the day goes by smoother n it's easier to resist urges.

One thing that seems promising too is niacin. Don't quote me but I think they have a very close relationship, niacin and nicotine. I've read that nicotine will attach to the same receptors that are made for niacin, but doesmt provide the benefits that your body normally gets from real niacin so it plays into the addiction somehow. Idk if its placebo or what but I've been popping these niacin supplements n it seems to help. Makes u burn n turn red tho - same Shit that's in golden seal and other products that help u get clean for a drug test. The burning sensation only lasts a few mins n goes away - it's something to do with the size of blood vessels but nothing terrible...just stay away from time release niacin cuz it doesn't cause the flushing (which is what u want) but can have negative effects on Ur liver (can't remember why)

Sounds good to me. If i did or didn't mention, i can happily quit for a month if i like, partly because i disagree but appreciate my mothers feelings. She considers herself a failure because both me and my twin smoke (older brother is golden, hands clean). But i know how addiction works, as you seem to as well, and just that 1, or just an e-cig or patch or gum, nit's just altering the perspectivre. Nicotine is nicotine. 'Sounds like that girl means something given your progress. Better to giver her somethig as well as yourelf, than foreit everything for a cigarette. Clearly cares dearly for you while appreciating that if you like weed, you like weed.

And in reference to former posts, i appologise if i came off a twat, i tend to do that, i like to play devils advocat from every perspective. Keep up the goopd woirk dude. I can't find fault in anyone who is working to quit smoking.

p.s. I'm high as a kite, but i love the idea of trying to be poetic and such bullshit :)

Thats another key, being ready. It goes the same for any addiction. You can send a heroin addict to rehab 80 times but they wont kick the habit unless they are ready.
Yes indeed. For me it was a self destructive behavior motivated by an over worked & underpaid lifestyle. Back when I went commercial and suddenly had the cash to do what I wanted, I no longer had the need to smoke. In fact it became something that held me back from enjoyment. It was easy to see from the other side. Times spent with friends where someone keeps excusing themselves from the party to go freeze outside and huff cancer. Lol smh.

congratulations on quitting ary0n! another bonus of not smoking cigarettes: your high will last longer. i used to smoke cigarettes and it took me several tries to quit; however, once i figured out that the high lasted longer without smoking that obligatory cigarette after smoking cannabis, it was super easy! (some will notice a slight bump in the high after a cigarette, but it does reduce the length of the high, imo) you've got this!:cool:
